I usually get a set of mint coins from the post office.

Try this website http://www.borngifted.co.uk

I have used them a couple of times and they have a lot of Christening gifts and personalised gifts available.

The Premium Bond is a lovely idea, but I think the min. is 100 nowadays, and you mightn't want to run to that. Although it dosn't look much, it offers a possibility of winning a prize as he goes along, and he would always have that last 100 to cash in .  Also, family might be able to add as he grows, and he himself could get the savings habit through holding them. The more PB's he has for some years, the greater the chances.
