Thanks,factor30 - I came up with those, and a couple of other words, but none fitted the clue.
Graybeard - anagram of Barnaby Rudge minus nub.
Across the pond indicates American spelling
Graybeard - anagram (novel) of Barnaby Rudge without nub (lifted from)
Stranger is the extra word
Graybeard American for greybeard - fogy
