If you buy something on e-bay and when it arrives it's not suitable, can you return it?

Think so, I'm sure eBay has a returns policy but you would need to check. Think individual sellers may vary.
Read the sellers T&C.
I suppose it might depend upon your definition of not suitable, don't think you can take stuf f back to a shop because it's not suitable.
micmak is right - it's down to the t&cs which you should have read
Depends whether it is a "shop" or an individual.
When you say if its not suitable, do you mean if you change your mind, the wrong size or just don't like it? Then I would say, No, unless the seller says you can return it (at your own cost) for a replacement/refund.
I bought a spare part for an electrical item, it was supposed to be a "one size fits all" but it didn't fit. I was allowed to send it back and got a refund, but had to pay the postage both ways.
Say you bought a dress from Freda Bloggs and when it arrived you didn't like it, I would say the answer would be a definite No.
I always state in my listings, "No returns, sold as seen in photo".
That is pretty clear.

Have read the returns policy now. Typical of me to do that after I ordered! I only sent off for it tonight so if I write to the seller now to cancel will he still charge me P&P even though he won't have posted it?
Your question is a bit too general for us to answer.
We need a bit more detail to help you further.
They may cancel the bid if you're lucky, but may still leave you a negative feedback which you probably don't want.
If the item is cheap, take it, keep it, and learn from the experience.
Question Author
Sorry I din't realise you would need more details. It was a 'Buy now' purchase and I'm thinking it might be too big but won't really know until it arrives. This is why I thought I might cancel it now. I wouldn't say it was cheap but it didn't cost a fortune. It just annoys me when you have to pay P&P twice 'cos if I order out of a catalogue, returns are free usually.
Caveat emptor - learn what that means
Oh Vallaw, that's just mean!
Question Author
How do I learn what it means, why can't you just say it?
It means 'buyer beware'
Question Author
Thanks JB I thought it was going to be something horrible with maggie saying it was mean.
Just mean because there was no explanation! Email the seller with your concerns - they may put your mind at rest, or agree to cancel the sale - you won't know until you ask! Keep it friendly though!
There is no requriement for the seller to accept a cancellation. All sales on EBay are final at the time you hit the "Buy" button, and you are legally obliged to pay for the item.
It strikes me as a bit unreasonable if you bid for something, then change your mind (which is what you have done) and then get upset because the seller won't pay the P&P for you to return it. Why should they pay for your mistake? If you expect "catalogue" standards of service then perhaps you should buy from a catalogue.
Question Author
If you had read my post properly you will see I did not bid for it, it was a 'Buy Now' purchase from a shop.
Just read my post and it comes across as a bit harsh. Sorry about that - but what I said is still valid.
JB is correct - you may get a sympathetic response, but remember you are asking a favour!!
Read the sellers notes - a lot do take returns but you have to pay the return postage. If the item is faulty or "not as described" that is another matter - I ordered a printer which was described as new but I found in it's internal memory that it had actually printed over 4000 copies!! The ink nozzles were blocked too, I told the seller who asked me to return it and he paid the postage but did not refund me despite repeatedly asking him he completely ignored me so he had both my money and the printer! so I rang Ebay who opened a dispute resolution with him and hey presto within 10 MINUTES I had my refund!!
missprim, I take it you are fairly new to ebay.
We don't know what you bought because you haven't told us.
You say you think it may be too big. ? What could it be? A dress, a massive wardrobe that is so big it won't fit through your front door? We don't know. So we can only tell you what we think on the information you have given.
Ebay is not like a catalogue. It is people selling stuff, and you either want it, or you don't, and when you click on "buy", you are entering into a contract, to complete the sale. Don't think we are being harsh, we are trying to help you understand the way it works.
Question Author
Ok I haven't changed my mind, Im just worried that what I have bought might be too big.
I seem to think that if you buy something where there are no facilities to see if it fits then you are within your rights to take it back. I thought that this would apply to ebay but perhaps the rules are different on there.
