I remember the 1975 Tory leadership contest very well. It would have made Macchiavelli proud. When discontent with Heath boiled over after he had lost 3 out of the last 4 elections, none of the cabinet heavyweights was prepared to challenge him. The Thatcher supporters deliberately talked down her chances; "She won't win, of course, but needs a strong showing to give Ted a wake-up call". This was so successful that she beat Heath on the first ballot, forcing him to withdraw. The four cabinet members who suddenly threw their hats into the ring after sitting on the sidelines were all Heath clones. The rest is history.
Of course, had Maudling beaten Heath in 1965, as was widely expected, things might have been different. Fascinating to speculate on what might have been.

MrsT never instilled greed, she instilled self sufficiency, survival, the world does not owe us a living, work hard and prosper. There is an equal chance for everyone. Perhaps we are seen as uncaring because we hate workshy scum.
I come from a totakl basket case of a family, bit parents in and out of jail, unemployed, sink estate type arrangement but MrsT taught me that even from here you can do well and get the life you want, you don't have to wallow in the broccoli. I had 3 jobs when I was 13, I have never claimed a penny from the state. OK I'm not Bill Gates but I have a comfortable life, it's possible, that's what MrsT taught us.
Today's workshy lay abouts would do well to adopt Thatcherism. Everyone has at least the same chance as me, no excuses.

I have lived, worked, and paid taxes under many Prime Ministers. Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister when I started work so I’m reasonably well placed to join in any debate on the effect that Prime Ministers have had on the country since the mid 1960s.
Throughout most of these Prime Ministerial tenures there were some winners and some losers. Many of the winners would have been winners whoever was in power. In the Thatcher era much is made of so-called “Yuppies” making their fortunes. Yes, they were provided with ample opportunities as a result of government policies. Some of them grabbed their chances with both hands and good luck to them. However, I would suggest that few of them were unduly influenced in their outlook to life by the resident of No.10 to such a degree that their outlook would have been any different had we had a different Prime Minister. The Conservatives won three General Elections during that time so some people must have agreed with some of their policies. Nobody knows for sure, but I would contend that the country would have been a very different place indeed had not Mrs Thatcher been PM from 1979-90.

So let’s turn to more recent times – the years 1997-2007. Many people made a nice bit of wedge during that time. Lawyers and bankers spring readily to mind. They too were given ample opportunities as a result of government policies and those people would probably have succeeded whoever was in power. Similarly some of them grabbed their chances with both hands and good luck to them as well. Labour won three General Elections during that time so some people must have agreed with some of their policies. The legacy of the “Blair Years” is plain (and easier to recall as it is more recent) for all to see. Again, Nobody knows for sure, but I would contend that the country would have been a very different place indeed had not Mr Blair been PM from 1997-2007.
So what’s my point? Mrs Thatcher left office twenty years ago last month. It is now being alleged (“Thatcher’s Children”) that her influence is still affecting the well being of the UK. I would suggest that the legacy now enjoyed by “Blair’s Children” has a far greater impact on the nation than that left by Mrs Thatcher and it’s about time that fact was recognised.
All governments and Prime Ministers influence the well being of the nation to a greater or lesser degree. Mrs Thatcher was not the only Prime Minister to do so and it’s about time her critics moved on.
