Mr Ainsworth will also warn that failure in the country's Helmand province could result in the destruction of NATO - leaving Britain's defence policy in tatters.

"It would undermine the NATO alliance structure that has been the bedrock of Britain's defence for the last 60 years... I will not allow this to happen on my watch.

The destruction of NATO, haven't we already seen this, judging by some of the member countries not coming to our aid in Afghanistan?

Bob Ainsworth should know by now, that it is the same in Europe, it is only the silly British that obey the rules? The French along with others only obey the rules that they agree with.

Could anyone imagine other European countries coming to our aid if the need arose?

You can understand why other countries do not like to get involvedin Afghanistan. We committed thousands there and that was before John Reid said we could exit without a life being lost. Tony Blair was so enthusiastic about going to another war zone (5 wars in 7 years) that he despatched them even before the Americans decided to send a full contingent. Gung Ho Blair has a lot to answer.

It reminds me of people in a bar and you get the same person to buy the first round of drinks. Not that the others will contribute later but they think if that fool wishes to impress let him go ahead.

We have been buying the first round in wars for the past 10 years.
