...their views on everyone? The Nigerian ones at the moment are demanding an end to western values etc. They are free to follow their religion, why is it so important to them that others be forced to do the same? Why can they not just quietly follow their own religion and leave others alone. It's as if any differing views are in someway so offensive to them that they must be converted or eliminated. Is their position so weak it cannot stand debate or dissent?

Ban all religion, life`s too short for wars
TCL-MUMPING.....propaganda!

Untouchables (Dalits) turn to christianity to escape slavery from the caste system. They are murdered for this!

"In once such desperate act, heavily armed rebels of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) attacked the village Hazrapara, about 120 kilometers northeast of Tripura's state capital Agartala on September 25. At least eight people, including three women, were killed and two critically wounded in the attack. All the victims were from the majority Bengali-speaking community in Tripura which borders Bangladesh"
TCL-MUMPING.......Internal fighting/wars have been rife in the sub-continent for generations due to differing beliefs.

However, the asians in UK seem to manage harmoniously under our Law & Order.
No fabioburke, you make a point in what you say, but.......
I was replying to R1Geezer's original post, asking why it's important for Nigerian muslims that folk in the west follow their beliefs.
No one, in my opinion, tries to convert and push their ideas, as much as the JW's do - unless it's the Mormons.
Cristianity's broken down into many different groups, each with their own interpretation of the bible, and wars and terrorist activities DO happen in this day and age because of it - such as in northern Ireland at the time of the Troubles, and the recent bombing in Spain.
So my point is, that although we don't have anything quite as bad as the Islamic fanatics, we DO have atrocities going off under the umbrella of "Christianity", and the more fervent the ideals, the more chance of "barbaric" practices going off within the smaller, but growing fractions. The whole religious thing's also a disguise for politics as well, and it's a pity that folk have to be indoctrinated from birth that any one particular faith is the right one.
It just seems to me that some of the religious leaders are lacking in common sense. All it'd take, is for people of different faiths to agree to differ, but on a sensible level. Unfortunately - dare I say it - that all commonly-followed religions are headed by men?
Ice - "that all commonly-followed religions are headed by men" .....you're so right, just to control women! It's out of hand!

We should have a 'KICK A MAN A DAY' event!
Ahh yes, the crusades. Werent the Christians simply taking back terrirtory that Muslims had taken by force from the Christians in the first place ? (seeing as the 'we were here first' attitude is prevalent in this thread)
Most wars are caused by over-testeroned bigoted men who don't believe in talk or conciliation. Power corrupts but usually their mind is corrupted.

If religion causes conflict then the basics of religion are wrong. If there are differences these should be extracted and agree to differ not to prove the other is wrong.
Geezer,

Done a bit of research, and the escalation in violence in Nigeria is more about re-distribution of oil wealth rather than the muslims trying to take over.

The Government is corrupt and in the pocket of the oil companies. In such circumstances extremist groups, of any creed, will seem to offer hope.

perhaps Gromit, I was going by what the muslim spokesman said they were fighting for, the removal of western values and systems.
R1Geezer

Perhaps they mistakenly attribute bribery and corruption as practised by the western oil companies as the norm in western society.
One thing their leader (recently shot dead) was saying in a recording on BBC World Service last night was that 'Western education' was against his religion. The commentators said that he had started out as a conventional moslem in one branch of the faith, had then switched to the other, had then found that not to his liking either, had broken away and 'become political' whereupon he had attracted followers in his extremism and his cause. He was not a conventional moslem (Just as well. If it is truly part of Islam that the faithful are to kill Christians, we'd be under attack by tens of thousands, millions, every day)
Such extremists offer a perverted interpretation of their own faith. No doubt Islam does demand that the faithful defend themselves and other believers when attacked, as self-defence, both personally and against attempts to stamp out or destroy the moslem religion. This they stretch to meaning that anything 'western' , and those who promote it or stand for it are to be killed. Mix that with economic or political grievances and there is a dangerous mix.
Christians don't terrorize and behead those of other faiths. The Crusades were formed to retaliate against islam takover of Jerusalem in the 7th Century. THey took enough abuse and fought back. This brought about the 1000AD Christian Crusades and for very good reasons. Read about early Turkey and how Islam started the Armenian genocide.

It's not just Muslims who feel the need to force their views on everyone.

See this link in which Mel insists we have the right to expect that everyone in our society adheres to the same way of life. With no hint of irony, she talks about "the right of the British people to live in a society defined by a common history, religion, law, language and traditions".
