At the D-day celebrations:
1) Gordon Brown was booed by some veterans.
2) In his speech he referred to Obama beach instead of Omaha Beach.

I may have missed this in the news, but only saw it for the first time in"Have I got News for you"

If it was kept quiet until the PLP meeting on Monday night, it was a smart move.

Haha...I watched that. What a shame eh?
It is a shame that even at their advanced age, the veterans are still easily manipulated by the media.

When Brown made that speech he had had a week of resignations and was fighting for his political life. He has been under a lot of pressure and reading one eyed from his notes he made a simple mistake.

While this was amusing, it was trivial and not worth reporting on the national news. It wasn't really hushed up, I had already seen the mistake, as his speech had already been broadcast live on BBC News 24, SKY News and a host of foreign channels.

For anyone who missed it, see the youtube link.

Brown slip
Question Author
Gromit...thanks.

How do you read "one eyed?"
I don't, but apparently Brown has one eye for reading with, and a glass one which he uses as a paper weight.
Question Author
Gromit...LOL
Brown really does only have one eye.
Isn't it sickening how when a man's down how many of us are ready to put the boot in. Amongst other things the right wing press have blamed him personally for include the global economic meltdown, MRSA, potholes in our roads etc etc.
I've no doubt they're frantically trying to get some evidence to pin the swine flu pandemic on him.
For goodness sake stop trying to score petty party points by analysing speeches for slip-ups and look at the real issues.
I saw the bit where Brown was booed but it didn't actually show who exactly was doing it. Possible it could have been deliberately stage managed??

I found his "Obama/Omaha" gaffe amusing but he must have squirmed later if it was pointed out to him. I'm sure he didn't realise at the time.
Well said, jason.p. Gordon Brown is not responsible for the global world economy collapsing..Give him a chance. He has had to deal with one disaster after another since he became Prime Minister.Furthermore people with afflictions shouldn't be mocked. And to those of you who voted with your feet for the BNP with the excuse that it was an alternative vote. If you really wanted to throw your vote away there were several other minor parties that you could have given it to. With reference to the mistake over 'Omaha' beach --- What a petty thing to pick up on. And why did the veterans boo Gordon Brown? This doesn't seem a very dignified way for these ex-servicemen to behave. Were they told to do it by the Media??
I didn't know either Sqad until I saw Have I got News for you. How embarrassing!
Question Author
andres...".What a petty thing to pick up on"

Booed by the veterans OR mixing Obama with Omaha.

He's the bl00dy Prime Minister, not the Head Boy at SpeechDay.

".Furthermore people with afflictions shouldn't be mocked"

Who has mocked the afflicted in this thread?

sqad 617. I presume you have two eyes ,so use them to read Gromits answer about Gordon Brown- 'using his glass eye as a paperweight' Next I said that it was petty to pick up on what we know as a 'slip of the tongue 'over the name of the beach. And I did ask -why was he booed??As yet no one has said why in this thread.I thought that the veterans would have been more dignified than to do that .Like paraffin ,I think the booing was stage managed.
>He has had to deal with one disaster after another
>since he became Prime Minister.

But it is HOW you deal with disasters that sorts out the men from the boys. Every leader has to deal with disasters (although many of Gordons are of his own making).

You only have to hear the comments of the people who have resigned from his cabinet to realise he is a TERRIBLE leader inside his own party.

He thinks he can do everything himself, does not trust anyone else to do a good job, and does not share responsibility.

One US president had a sign on his desk saying "The buck stops here" and Gordon wanted the job and hated Blair because he had it.

Now he knows what is required in being PM, and he cant cut it.
Question Author
andreas....I do not know who booed him or whether or not it was "stage managed" but to have the term "stage managed" and "Gordon Brown" in one sentence is an anachronism, as nothing was more "stage managed" than the Saturday night rally in East London.

Jason..don't spoil your arguement with sarcasm...I do not blame GB for the world reccesion, MRSA, Pot holes or swine flu, but there are many other things that in my opinion were ill adviced.

The only reason that I started this post was thet it was something that had escaped my attention for one week.

andres....what has the BNF got to do with this thread?
Squad. I never said You blamed Gordon Brown for global recession MRSA potholes etc, but the tory press certainly does (see the Daily Express campaign against potholes "stop Brown wrecking our roads")
And when did a little sarcasm spoil an argument?
Question Author
jason....LOL
You know, I caught a glimpse of him yesterday at Trooping the Colour. He sat there with such an arrogant, smug expression on his face and I thought, 'yeah, if it hadn't been for you and your friend Tony, we'd never have danced to George Bush's tune in the first place and there'd be a lot more lads competing to go out onto that parade ground.'

Never have I despised a government more than this one.
Question Author
saxy....remember the reason for going to war? WOMD which were never found.

Iraq was a problem in the Middle East and invasion was seen by some to be the answer..............including me.

I was wrong.

Servicemen die.........59,000 in Bomber Command alone in WW2..............sorry but that is how it is.
saxy_jag

Are you forgetting the Tories voted (with the Government) to send these young men to war?

On Iraq there were just 149 votes against the war, 139 of those were Labour rebels.
GB was booed 'cause he advertently took HMaj invite to the celebrations.
