Bit late for that I am afraid.

This stupid incompetent labour government have allowed not only people from other EU countries to swarm in here, but also people from non-EU countries.

They have also been so slack at reducing the level of illegal immigrants as well.

These idiots in power believed the "golden days" would go on forever, and of course we are ow saddled with a major problem.

When Poland, and other countries, joined the EU many other countries set limits on how many people they would take.

Some moron in our country thought it would only be about 10,000 people so we decided to set no limit.

We now have about 650,000 people living here from Poland. We are even paying the child benefit for their children in Poland as well (have you heard anything so stupid).

In theory ANYONE currently living in an EU country can come here and work (we can do nothing to stop them), one of the great "benefits" of being in the EU.

This is a classic case of closing the door after the horse has bolted.

I suppose to answer your question, jake, you need to pose another:

Do you consider that the UK is still an autonomous nation state, in charge of its own affairs (and so could reserve London jobs for London people it so wished)? Or has it been subsumed into a European Super State (aka the European Union) and has no control over who comes here and what they do?

Answers on a (very small) postcard please.

No you have to consider whether the interests of the UK can be entirely considered independently.

An example:

I look around the room here - we have 4 Britons, an Australian an Italian, a Spaniard an Indian aSouth African and the Director is a Canadian (No Poles right now we lost him back home about a year ago)

If we did not have such immigration we could not fill the vacancies with well qualified people and our team would be moved overseas overnight.

Globalisation has happened - sorry there you go

There's no going back - companies went global and will move operations around the globe where they see fit - if you can't compete tough the work will go to a country where they can.

You are struggling to hold on to a view of a little independant Island whilst the world has just ignored you and moved on.

You have to deal with the reality of this now and not try to turn the clock back because you can't.

The idea of nationhood is frankly outdated in a world straddled by major multinationals.

Go tell BAE that they should consider the good of the UK in their decision making process

It may well be that companies need to import labour. I'm not convinced that we need to import as much as we do - especially at the unskilled end of the market. But that's another issue.

However, the UK government - not multinational companies and certainly not foreign governments and quasi governments - should be the arbiters of who comes here and who does not. In taking their decision the UK government should take on board all the implications of allowing people in, and not simply the convenience of the multi-nationals.

The idea of �nationhood� is not outdated. If it were countries such as Australia � in many ways a far more enlightened nation than the UK - would not see fit to take the measures they have just announced. And of course none of us would need passports, would we.

I'm as "patriotic" as the next Brit but this seems a wee tad mischievous to me, having another unsubstantiated dig.

I should have qualified my question by saying should immigration be allowed from EU countries. The free movement of labour now exists from 27 EU countries, is that not enough to fill the vacancies. I wonder how many contributors to this site have been sacked or made redundant because of ageism who could also fill the demands.

But while many would not disagree with a global employment market the current employment figures coupled with the jobs advertised speak for themselves.

The general impression I have is that foreign workers take up more British jobs than foreign companies give to local employment.

Ask your Australian Jake how his country have controlled immigration and why it's so successful?
