And lets be quite clear on this there are Islamic clerics who say that the book says that to take an innocent life is a sin and you will not get to heaven.
There are mad men who say that under Jihad anyone is fair game even the innocent even the innocent muslim.
Is that not a contradiction or does your book allow both.

No- on that I agree with you 99.9% First bit is right and the clerics who are saying that killing any innocent is not only a sin but one of the major sins, are right and are saying that according to the book.
However the ones saying otherwise are not talking about the book. I have no doubt that they are wrong. Because Quran even says that the one who surrender even in the battle field should not be killed and even should be protected as he is depending upon you now.
People of course are using religion for their wrong doings and have done so over the history.
But one final thing I would say here, unless there are same standards and justice in this world, there would be no peace. I have no hesitation saying that innocent being killed by individuals or by countries should be condemned and stopped. Regardless of whom those innocents are. Unless a Palestinian child is as important as Israeli, an Afghan child is as important as an American or British child there would be no peace in the world. What do you think?

Sorry forgot to mention one thing about the last part of your post. When people do not act upon the book you can not call it contradiction. Say if car�s manual clearly says use diesel only. And someone puts in petrol. Would you call it a contradiction? Who would you blame, car? manual? or the person who did it?

Religions tend to based on a set of rules that more often than not are so obvious they shouldn't even need saying (don't steal, be nice to people, show respect for others etc),. Because they trot out these rules, people seem to think of the religions as having some in-built righteousness.
For my money, the fact that followers have to be threatend with God's wrath before they behave themselves makes them less 'good'. The rest of us do it because we can see the effect our behaviour has on others.
Given the many examples of aggressive behaviour in the name of religion (by just about all of them - Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus), it surprises me that people still buy into this peace, love and understanding bullsh*t.
