The FT is pink because back when it was first published, pink paper was cheaper to produce than the standard whitish grey of today.

It is still pink today because it's simply traditional, although the paper used is now more expensive.
Many papers giving results for football matches etc. were also pink, for much the same reason. They too still are, for distinctiveness, though in the case of the FT its probably embarassment..
Question Author
Bit strange answering my own question, but it turns out that the FT is pink because at its foundation it simply wanted to be easily distinguished from its rival (financial news), which it later bought but decided to carry on with the same colour any way.
