Is this a derogatory term? I have heard it many times of late used by muslim preachers but I can remember it previously used by white South Africans when referring to blacks...I think.
I can vaguely remember a film with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, where Danny Glover shoots this South African bloke and says "You've just been de-kaffur-nated."

Think I've just got that all mixed up ....
i thought it was kaffa, and yes, it's like the ugly 'n' word.
From www.dictionary.com:

kaffir
1. Disparaging and Offensive. (in South Africa) a black person: originally used of the Xhosa people only.
2. (lowercase) kafir (def. 4).
3. (lowercase) Islam. kafir (def. 2).
Hmmm, isnt kaffur the same as an infidel?
there was a war movie on tv recently, with some mercenaries. One of them was an afrikaaner, and used this word in front of a black character. He wasn't pleased...
seems we may be talking about two different words.

Kaffa is defined in the urbandictionary:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term =kaffa

Derogatory term for a black person.

Kaffir seems to have different roots:

In the dispatches program on C4 recently, where they filmed secretly in Mosques, many of the hate filled speeches used the term kaffir a lot.

Whenever it was said it was used in a sneering way, almost like the "n" word for blacks or the "p" word for asians.

It seemed to cover anybody and everybody these muslims did not like, including Tony Blair, George Bush, the police, non-muslinms, jews, gays and most people in authority.

Well bless them for having an all encompassing derogatory that can be used for gays, George Bush and Jewish people.

Never thought there would be a single word to cover all bases like that.

That shows a real dedication to intolerance.
Sorry i am getting mixed up with kuffar
...and then there's kaffir lime leaves, which I believe is a key ingedient in many Thai dishes.
it's just a term like many others used to describe whole swathes of humanity by small minded people.
