What are you suggesting instead? Anarchy? Dictatorship?

Should we have freedom of choice or freedom from choice?
Question Author
The thing that stops the public turning to anarchy is the belief that they don't have to take the law into ther own hands and that the state will protect them. Unfortunately the state/judiciary are not handling it. I'm not suggesting anything, instead I'm making the point that if the general public cannot trust the state to protect them the inevitable result will be that they protect themselves by dishing out summary justice via mob rule. No one wants that but the powers that be are flirting ever closer to it by not protecting the public and indeed persisting with a system that effectively encourages crime by lack of effective punishment.
Perhaps we need to introduce Sharia law, as per your previous question?
If someone tried mugging me I'd give them a proper hiding. I would refuse to answer to any court which tried to prosecute me for defending myself. Simple, really.
i don't feel unprotected - in the past 10 years i have been mugged and had my property damaged, but in each occasion the police have been very helpful and the offender has been arrested and charged.
what are your experiences of crime that make you feel so vulnerable?
We all know the answer. Build more jails and make them proper jails. no luxuryies, no tv's and no drugs. Daily rehabilitation and no-onoe let out 1./2 way thru their sentence. If we want to do it properly outsource lifers to Thailand - they know how to run jails.
For the kids boot camps. Must be plenty of ex-seargent majors that could knock some sense into them and channel their energies.
For older teens then its National Service for 2 years.
Next lets sack all liberal judges and get a sensible justice system going.
Name and shame slimey lawyers.

Of course for all of this to happen we have to get rid of the Wicked Witches pension plan aka HRA.

The trouble with the chattering classes is they have their head stuffed up their a*se so far its pitch black and they cant see anything.

Waldo, hilariious, have you no comment on this question?

ConfusedJohn : You would be proscuted for hurting the little darlings.

Iggyb: I am concerned on behalf of the vulnerable, the pensioners that are too frightened to leave their homes, the women that feel inteimidated on streets, anyone who is alone and preyed on by the ever increasing gangs of sub humane slime that inhabit our streets that prey mainly on the weak. I am able to care for others clearly you care only about yourself. They may even get arrested and charged, then some mealy mouth do gooding beak will slap them on the wrist, oooh thaty must be terrified.
Anyone remember the Mods & rockers, the punks who used to go around in gangs fighting and intimidating etc etc?

Why do people believe that this is a modern day problem?

Or were the mods trying to steal the rockers money?

Rock on cr@p journalism.
Lol @ Vic who is absolutely right, nothing is any worse now than it's ever been, in fact in a lot of places it's a good deal better. Stop scaremongering and get a grip people.
I think it will become increasingly difficult for a court to prosecute someone for protecting themselves and their property. If someone stopped me on the street and tried to take my possesions I would advise them to leave me alone. If they insisted or became violent I would hurt them. If I've given due warning that continuing with their course of action is going to result in sore ribs then they've effectively asked for it. More and more people will be like this for as long as the police are as hopeless as they are.
The problem (if it is a problem) with this site is that there are two distinct camps: there are those of us who want to see the police police and crime dealt with swiftly and severely, and there are those (they know who they are) who want to empathise and take a holistic approach and if that means treating the little b4stards to sympathy and safaris in Kenya to try to understand why the scumbags are mugging old ladies, then so be it.

Now personally if somebody stepped over the front door of my house uninvited they have chosen to leave any rights they may have had at the front door and are therefore fair game - equally if me or my family were threatened on the street by these urchins (and let's be honest here - we're talking about male teenage chavs aren't we), then again I would defend myself and my family rigorously.

So, to answer the question, in the above two scenarios I would most definitely take the law into my own hands, and indeed have done (a couple of years ago I caught a couple of chavs trying to set light to my shed and gave them a damn good hideing - and wouldn't hesitate to do it again).

I'd love to see the police police, but they are so over-burdened with red tape that I don't think they get the opportunity to do so.

The problem is Flipflop, that the police go after the victim rather than the perpetrator. You beat up a couple of yobs trying to set fire to your shed, I'm amazed they didn't arrest you! They are too busy warning old ladies that if they put barbed wire round their fence they'll be prosecuted if some lowlife cuts himself trying to break in. It's not entirely the polices' fault, the yobs know their rights and woe betide any copper that clips one round the ear. I dread to think what it'll be like in 20 years time. Anarchy may well be on the cards!
Haven't there been numerous surveys carried out by many agencies over the past decade or so, that have shown that crime has actually decreased?!

Is it not so that it is our perception that has perpetuated the myth that there is some kind of martial law on the streets of Britain at the moment?

It does not surprise me that violent crime has risen, however. People who have missed the gravy train in the inner cities have become increasingly desperate and disenfrachised since the eighties. This then leaves them with fewer options. It's alright to have the luxury of being able to post opinions on a website, but I'd wager that most of us in this forum have little or no connection to the poverty that makes this kind of crime inevitable.
"They are too busy warning old ladies that if they put barbed wire round their fence they'll be prosecuted if some lowlife cuts himself trying to break in."

tell you what - go down to either your police station or local magistrates courts and ask them the number of arrest they have made for this (not warnings / hearsay etc but arrests)

Then ask them for the figures on how many low life scum they have arrested for burgling etc (again not warnings but arrest)

Why do people believe cr@p journalism?

"The problem (if it is a problem) with this site is that there are two distinct camps"

Ahh - you are either with us or against us? - no middle ground etc etc. - its either 'string up em' or safaris in Kenya!
sorry i thought we were having a debate - i hadn't realised that you were only looking for people to support your own feeling... maybe next time you could make a note in the question and i won't bother.

but while i'm here i'll just add that i believe that whilst our criminal justice system is not perfect it is certainly the best in the world and something that instead of knocking at every opportunity and getting caught up in the most recent scares we should feel proud of and work together to support
Question Author
Iggy we are having a debate and I welcome your views of your experience. What I don't welcome is your sycophantic sarcasm.

"What are your experiences of crime that make you feel so vulnerable"

I don't feel vulnerable , that's the point, the yobs pick on the weak, they tend to leave props alone, I think you knew that,

You seem to be saying "I feel safe so there's no problem" that's not debating. I was responding to your apparent selfishness.

read Bigmalc's second answer for an example.

Now have another go.
blimey loosehead - calm down... i was just trying to make some sense of your question by trying to find out why you feel the public are unprotected - i wasn't trying to question your manhood or anything was just interested .... no sarcasm there - and definitely nothing sycophantic?!

regarding only attacking the weak - i have considered your argument but i still don't think the danger of crime is as bad as the perceived danger of crime, if you get my meaning...

don't think this is me having a go at you - it is simply a response to your question...
Oh my god! Someone's been robbed? Society's falling apart! WE'LL ALL ******* DIE PEOPLE!!! ARRGGHHH!!!!
NH is the most profound t*t.
