I see on the BBC news website that discussions have started about awarding compensation to the relatives of slaves. Where the hell will this end? do we pay compensation to the Irish for the potato famine? The Scottish for the oppresion of the clans? Iraq? People who lived in the English Channel who lost their homes when the British ice from the Ice age melted and flooded them? I know i'm being flippant but this is absolutely ridiculous.

Surely this can technically only happen if the Government issues a formal apology. Tony Blair's "deep sorrow" is not an apology, and let's hope the government stick with that.

I agree with you. Having heard Ester Stanford (Rendezvous of Victory Campaign) interviewed this morning, I was very perturbed, she is the worst kind of racist, and there was no plain-talking robust opposition to her, just wishy-washy feel-good stuff. This sort of race card play propels many people towards the far right.

I worry for the future of Britain, but I am sure it is too late. The worst prognosis is if you are White and Christian.
You're of course correct. The reperations should only apply to those who moved back to their african tribes - I'm being serious btw. If they're happy where they are, no compo necessary.
However, I am Irish, and if you feel any compo's forthcoming for the famine, invasion, land laws, evictions, black & tans etc., I'll happily take your dosh...!
Can you post a link please

I can only see this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6187216 .stm

This talks about Blair's expression of sorrow falling short of even a full apology.

Where are the BBC reporting talks on compensation?

You inflicted Westlife on us so I think we're even!
Fair point...

White racists have never really needed a reason to 'go right'. They've been joining racist parties since the 70s (remember the NF) which was absolute years before there was any significant voices in the black community putting any point of view.

But it's a nonsense to talk about reparations. How could it be calculated? Based on what figures?

My guess is that if you were to calculate a value on reparations based on the number of lives lost, families destroyed etc etc...well, it would bankrupt the country.

On the other hand, it would be lovely to see some very rich land-owning folk have to give up their mansions so me and my kith and kin could move in.

We'd employ them as servants...we'd even pay them!
What about those bloody Romans!
Actually Whickerman you have a vaid point about the Irish. Did you know thousands of Irish were sent into slavery in the West Indies, rounded up by Oliver Cromwell's lot?
Slavery is not about race, it's about slavery.
Btw I think no compensation should be forthcoming to "relatives of slaves" that's an absurd idea.
Do you think I can petition the Egyption goverment for an apology, for enslaving my ancestors?,
these descendents of slavery should be thanking us.
if it wasnt for slavery theyd still be kicking their heels and scratching their headsin some crappy little mud hut village in Africa.

where do these people get off ?

you can bet your bottom dollar that slimeball Livingstone will be at the front of all the "celebrations " next year.

Why do we need to waste taxpayers money on this typical leftwing frivolity ?
So what about the relatives of the hundreds of thousands of young men who were sent to almost certain death by going over-the-top in world war one.

Was that any worse than what happened with slavery?

I am afraid some awful things went on in history (by all nations) and in some places it still does today.

Nations cannot expect to feel guilty about everything they have done in the past, and certainly not to pay for it.
In that link you've given us the only person talking about reparations is the Vice-chair of the Pan African Reparation Coalition

Where do you get the idea from that "discussions have started"

It takes more than one side for a discussion!

What discussions between who and who?

I think you're a bit premature here!

Maybe I am a little premature but all it takes is one person to suggest it and the leftie yoghurt knitters will be straight on the band wagon.
bazwillrun - you're an idiot.
Yes the whole thing is ridiculous, and does not help in anyway to promote tolerence and intergation between the races.

One excuse I heard on the radio this morning
(I think it was Ester Stanford, who said it) was because of slavery there are now many break-ups in Black families. This was because slaves were never allowed to build families, so therefore Black people have not yet mastered the art of living together as a family.

If any cash is to be dished out, on something that happened hundreds of years ago, I want compansation for the lost years of civilian life, and the lost of earnings, due to my conscripted years in the Royal Air Force.
No discussions have started, and no discussions will. You may get some pressure groups agitating for it, but they have been for several years now, to no effect.
We had this problem in Bristol(uk) at the moment the centre of bristol is being redeveloped into a new shopping area and they wanted to call it merchants quarter, but your politically correct do-gooders said you cant call it that because (wait for it)....merchants traded in slaves and it may upset the local black population.
we had tons of letters in the local rag(bristol evening post) saying that merchants traded in everything.
so we have a choice ..do we call it Brunel,.......Colstons or somthing else i cant remember.
if I remember correctly colston had some slight links with the slave trade.
I think we should Acknowledge but not say sorry and as for compensation.no chance!
i could'nt belive the lady on bbc news yesterday morning saying she would like a apology and compensation(so its all about money and not saying sorry in my opinion).
p.s ..i didnt like the name merchants quarter,it sounded like a tiny shopping area but merchants centre would have been better.
bazwilrun...let me get down to your level....... boy is that trench deep

OK bazwilrun........they still have todgers that are longer than yours and your women still prefer them to your pasty bloodless face.
LOL DOM

Bazwilrun have you heard of the phrase

'once you done black you will never go back'

ask your local teenage chav what that signifies.
