What is the hotest you remember? I can remember the rail lines "melting" in 1976, I think it was 31c but it seemed hottter then than this current heatwave of 33c+.

I was only 8 in 1976 but I remember it was blimmin hot..yes it did seem hotter, but I think that was because I had to go out and play in the heat all day, LOL.

I remember sinking in the tarmac and ruining my clothes, burning myself on the paths, the ladybird invasions, wasps in my bottles of coke & sharing baths with my cousins. We didn't have a hosepipe for them to ban or the luxury of having a shower instead of wasting bath water!

yes it is known as a 'sun kink' and is not that uncommon. the steel expands so much that when it has no place to go it forces itself to go sideways, usually taking the whole railbed with it. leaving a big s shaped bend or kink.
The 76 heatwave went on for weeks, I was working in Cornwall at the time & will never forget the storm that broke the heat spell!
I remember when it reached the record UK temperature of 39C in 2003.
ahh sprinklers in the garden, ladybird invasion, zoom lolly ices, jumpers for goal posts, isn't it, wasn't it, mmm?
I was 12 in 1976 and remember the tarmac melting on the road that went past our house. I also remember the first day it rained, probably towards the end of August, and everybody went outside and stood in the rain. I also remember in our field, there were cracks in the ground that you really could put your foot in.
I think they melt at about 3,000 degrees C but know what you mean. Yes 1976 was very hot and of course everyone was "whingeing" about it as normal. on the UK.
I wonder what temperature people stop moaning either hot or cold ?
I'm with Bernardo on this one, 2003 was the hottest (and one of the longest) summers on record. I was heavily pregnant during July, Aug and Sept (gave birth end of sept) and it was exhaustingly hot.
the highest temperature recorded in UK was 38.5 in 2003

Tellboy. Several of today's papers had a cover picture of a woman picking her shoe out of a melted tar road.
I always remember pegging out a load of washing in'76.
It was all nappies and babygros , and when I got to the end and went back to to beginning of the line they were bone dry! I just walked along the line taking it down again.
Every morning I'd wake up and hope the weather had broken.
