It seems that any suspicion gives banks the right to close accounts, without explanation, to avoid risk, even when such suspicion/risk seems ridiculously small and remote. That seems wrong. Obviously society shouldn't tip off the bad guys that they are under suspicion, but one wonders what society thinks closing the accounts of everyone around them...

Khandro; nobody here knows why Farage's account was closed. It's all speculation and suspicion.

^^^ He does!

//Furthermore, him falling below the required wealth level doesn’t explain why others who also fall below that level haven’t had their accounts cancelled.”

like who?

https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1787918/Farage-bank-closed-vox-pops-coutts

//One of the BBC reporters who broke the story later clarified this was also the case for many Coutts customers who had contacted him saying they were below the criteria but had not been threatened with account closure.//
erm that link involves a person standing outside the banks doors and questioning whoever came out… and acting surprised when nobody talks to the press lol

where are all these customers who have accounts below the wealth level?
You obviously have a dislike for Mr Farage which is you privilege but there is no point in debating with you if you poo poo all the evidence that has been presented to you because it doesn't suit your agenda..
what evidence? show me
From the Law Society...

"PEPs can be:

heads of state, heads of government, ministers, and deputy or assistant ministers
members of parliament (MPs)
members of courts of auditors or of the boards of central banks
ambassadors, chargés d’affaires and high-ranking officers in the armed forces
members of the administrative, management or supervisory bodies of state-owned enterprises
members of supreme courts, constitutional courts or other high-level judicial bodies whose decisions are not generally subject to further appeal, except in exceptional circumstances"

I guess Farage would not be considered a PEP.
So why does he say he is one?
This is the full list of people who can be classified as a PEP:
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2017/692/regulation/35/made
Also, the law,society’s advice is:
Situations which might suggest you have a PEP client include:

receiving funds in the retainer from a government account
receiving communications on official letterhead from the client or a related person
general conversation with the client or person related to the retainer which links the person to a PEP
news reports suggesting your client is a PEP or is linked to one.

Even the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt & ex chancellor Lord Clarke;

'Jeremy Hunt is among the politicians who have been denied a bank account because of the “completely disproportionate” application of money laundering rules, The Telegraph can reveal.

It can also be revealed that a string of peers, including Lord Clarke of Nottingham - one of Mr Hunt’s predecessors as chancellor - have had their credit cards cancelled because of what they believe to be an overzealous application of the rules by American Express.

Lord Clarke, who was chancellor under John Major, said he had suddenly faced onerous demands by American Express to provide documentation and financial information despite having held a credit card with the firm for decades.'

Telegraph
Sounds as though Farage has not been singled out for ill-treatment by his bank.
and all those people havent flounced abroad
Bednobs, there’s no ‘flouncing’ involved. The simple fact is he needs a business account in order to run his life - and he can’t get one.
He has been offered a NatWest account. He hasn’t said whether he has opened one. So the whole narrative about being forced out of public office and having to live abroad is rather bogus.
Gromit, he’s been offered an ordinary current account. You can’t run a business through a current account. The banks don’t allow it.
‘ The simple fact is’ that if Farage hadn’t campaigned to take us out of the EU, he’d still have a legal right to one.

The irony of this seems to be lost on him.

Zacs-Master, and what you appear to be missing is that the PEP status is EU generated and applies to everyone in the EU just as much.
I’m not missing anything, Khandro. It makes zero difference who ‘generated’ it to my point about people having protection within the EU which Farage was desperate to leave. Be careful what you wish for, eh!
Oh and as a matter of fact, you’re completely wrong that PEP was generated by the EU as it was first coined 20 years ago by the Financial Action Task Force who have many members worldwide:
https://www.fatf-gafi.org/en/the-fatf/who-we-are.html

You been getting your facts from Guido Fawkes again?
FATF is from our membership of the G7 not the EU.
I have been reading up on who can be designated a PEP, and Farage does not have any of the criteria.

// As of June 2017, the UK's PEP definition is identical to the 2012 FATF definition, i.e. including reference to domestic PEPs; it is found in the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 Section 35(12).[10] A PEP is considered to be any individual who fits any of the criteria listed below:

- A foreign person who has held any time in the preceding year a prominent public function outside the United Kingdom, in a state or international institution
- Members of courts of auditors or of the boards of central banks
- Ambassadors, chargés d'affaires and high-ranking officers in the armed forces
- Members of the administrative, management or supervisory bodies of state-owned enterprises
- Heads of state, heads of government, ministers and deputy or assistant ministers
- Members of parliaments
- Members of supreme courts, constitutional courts or of other high-level judicial bodies //

None of which applies to Farage. He cannot be PEP.
