//Anyone arriving in the UK on a small boat will be prevented from claiming asylum, under new laws expected to be announced next week.

Ministers will have a duty to "detain and swiftly remove" anyone who comes to the UK through that route, said Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Currently, asylum seekers have the right to remain in the country to have their case heard. Under new legislation, those who arrive in small boats will be prevented from claiming asylum in the UK, removed to Rwanda or a "safe third country" and banned from returning permanently.//

This strikes me as pretty pointless.
What is needed is to stop the boats.
That way you avoid the danger to the migrants, avoid them landing in the UK in the first place.
The threat of being sent to Rwanda has had zero effect and neither will this.
If anything it’ll make things worse as legal challenges cause further delays which simply add to the backlog.

The legal challenges are what needs to be stopped. That's what's stymied all attempts to solve this problem up to now. Saying 'it isn't working' is ridiculous when, because of restrictive Human Rights laws, it's never been done. Do it and the traffickers will be out of business in no time at all.
NAOMI, "You can safely bet that if everyone arriving on those boats was instantly packed off to Rwanda the boats would instantly stop coming."

How many migrants can Rwanda handle each year?

Why aren't we targeting the criminal gangs who traffic people?
It doesn't matter what you "threaten" with, that is not going to work.
And the legal challenges are a side issue.
This is just firefighting with water pistols.

Rwanda won't need to handle many. A boatload or two sent straight to Africa and that'll be it. With that outcome guaranteed, others won't make the crossing.

No - they are not. They are what keep people here.
Expect protracted challenges through the courts. It won't stop them trying to get here.
It will never stop so long as people are making money from it ...both legally and illegally.
The problem is too many do gooding trobbers kyboshing every attempt at fixing this. Then they moan that it's not fixed.

Always someone else's fault never their own.

No one is trying to stop them coming here legitimately, but these people are not. If the prospect of a new life in Africa is guaranteed, it will stop.
It would make more sense to stop people come in the first place. Trying to remove once here us a whole different problem.
We are trying to stop them coming here, thus the connecting flight to Rwanda to put them off. Unfortunately we have no jurisdiction in France so we can't go there and do their policing job for them. Paying them to do it clearly doesn't work.

We can't.
I wonder how many of Rwanda’s most vulnerable refugees will be resettled in the UK?
Tie up the lifeboats.

Don't know, corby,. Try google.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries states, the UK will, "resettle a portion of Rwanda’s most vulnerable refugees in the United Kingdom", hardly definitive, is it?

I can't help you, corby. I didn't write it.
