bit of a childish thing to do. and yet - does he have a point? should the UN be even-handed and commemorate the dead of both sides?

Tactless, but obviously a deliberate act to unsettle the Ukrainean delegates.
He has a point, but maybe it wasn't the time to make it.

In any case, although it wasn't the decision of the individual soldiers to start the conflict which caused the deaths, however it was the choice of their government/president and as such, as a group, can expect less sympathy. The UN is merely reflecting this.
There is an argument that there would be no Russian dead, or indeed Ukrainian dead, without the actions of Mr Putin, whom the ambassador represents.

It is somewhat disingenuous to speak of 'all lives being precious', when the lives are being sacrificed are the direct result of the unprovoked military invasion of a sovereign nation.
Nebenzya is an ignorant ***.

That’s all I have to say on the matter

No.
I wondered why the UN even allows Russia to attend at the moment. Farcical.
It was to honour the victims of aggression. The Ukrainians.
And what Ich said.
You would be hissing in the wind to find any respect from mass murderers.
Nebenzya probably had no option; either say willingly to avoid being dumped out of the promotion rankings, or to avoid being unwillingly dumped out of a window.
Russia belongs to United Nations and has a veto vote.
Yes, but why has Russia's membership not been suspended for the duration? It would give them another reason to settle and make peace.
It was a stupid act by the Russian ambassador in our view - but it will give him great political kudos with Putin.

Good point about commemorating the dead of both sides - but whilst the war is raging, sides will be taken and it is probably an action that needs to wait for peace.
Putin dont want peace. 1, he wouldnt have started this war in the first place. 2, he enjoys war and killing people. The bloke is a complete nutter, and loves the power he has. But sooner or later he will meet his end, one way or another. The clock ticks the same for everyone.
