So much for the pledge to tackle this!? Let’s hope Cruella can have at least a scintilla of effectiveness over her predecessor, shouldn’t be too difficult?

We have a new Home Secretary, let’s hope she does better.
She needs to junk the stupid Rwanda plan which was always nothing more than a gimmick.

If she reverts to type it’ll be full steam ahead with the Rwanda plan I’ll wager.
That plan at least takes the pressure off remote Scottish islands. :-)
Thought Brexit was supposed to have stopped all this immigration ,So The Brits were duped again by you know who!
//Thought Brexit was supposed to have stopped all this immigration//

You thought wrong - not for the first time.

This problem will not be cured unless and until the government repealts the UK's Human Rights Act and withdraws from the European Convention on Human Rights. Once that is done measures need to be taken to physically prevent the migrants from landing because once here there is very little chance of them being removed. All the Home Secretaries in the world will not end the problem until that is done.

Until then the government might as well charter a weekly ferry to transport those wishing to come here to arrive in comfort. They can charge £3k each of them is said to be paying people smugglers for their trip in a rubber boat.
Who's Cruella?
Liz Truss?
Suella Braverman, I think.
That makes more sense...
Brexit was to stop freedom of Movement but no one told the Immigrants.. ....
It certainly stopped British businesses trading, but I doubt you will hear how many have gone bust.
12.02 NJ , Brexit was all about Immigration and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. OK.
During the glorious reign of Priti Patel, over 60,000 illegal immigrants have gotten into the country. Her predecessor, Amber Rudd let in 299.
PP spent longer doing her hair and nails before turning up for work. :0)
NJ,
We had the UK's Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights in 2018 when just 299 came. Neither legislation has changed in the last 3 years, so I have to assume it was the half hearted and useless management of the Home Secretary was the reason for the deterioration of the border force, similar to the UK's police force which is no longer fit for purpose.
Interesting, the same people that rejoice in the thwarting of any fix to the problem, moan that the problem is not fixed.

In fairness it needs to be properly planned, legally sound and properly implemented.
Knocking out ideas on the back of a fag packet on a Friday afternoon by the far-right wing of the party isn’t really the way to go about it.

Since you seem willing to engage in a reasoned debate, Gully, we’ve done this before. I can’t speak for anyone else, but immigration was not a deciding factor for me (it was not an issue when I made my decision that I’d prefer the UK to leave the EU). But I’ll ask the same question as I always do: if immigration was the deciding factor for many people, so what if it was?

In fact the number of irregular arrivals in 2018 was estimated to be around 14,000, with around half that number arriving by small boat:

In order to support that you’d need to know how many attempts were made at illegal entry. It is doubtful whether the level of detection is any different now to the level seen in earlier years. But the number of attempts has risen considerably simply because, once here illegal migrants know they will not be removed. As well as that, in the past few years the chosen mode of travel has shifted away from stowing away in lorries (which was not particularly easy) to simply embarking from the French coast in an inflatable. It doesn’t matter how strong a border force the country has. If all it is going to do is to meet the rubber boats when they cross into UK waters so as to ensure their safe arrival, all that increasing the strength of the BF will do is increase the number of arrivals. It is frankly ludicrous that an organisation tasked with keeping the borders secure actually facilitates illegal arrivals.

What do you suggest is done (properly planned, legally sound and properly implemented) under the current overarching legislative framework, fatticus?
NJ,
Put your glasses on. The number by boat in 2018 was 299, as shown on the graph in your link.
