Our road was closed today due to a fire on the common adjacent to the field and wood behind us. I don't feel we are safe. Fire is now hopefully out but road partially closed in case it flares again!! Fire engines out from three areas. We were indoors because of extreme heat and didn't even know until I just read it on local news.

I feel sorry for the firefighters - must be a terrible task in this weather.
Miss Terious, I am really nervous too. We are surrounded by stubble fields which the farmers are not cultivating because the ground is just too hard. Everything is tinder dry. A discarded fag or even broken bottle would be catastrophic because all the trees round here are dry.

My parents had fields of standing wheat go up either side of them on two consecutive days last month - each taking the combine out too.
I remember when it was quite common to burn the stubble - but after several catastrophes it was eventually banned.

Barmaid, we are in the same situation. Our oil tank is behind a timber garage at the back of our house adjacent to the fence that separates ud from a really huge field of rape stubble with the wood behind. Fields all around us too. Our garden is full of large trees with a small orchard.
The sooner this ruddy heatwave ends, the better ....

Couldn't agree more Shirley!! I hate this heat.I prefer cold and rain to this.

And Shirley, I'm worried about my deer!
Bring on the rain! Hopefully a good soak. I like sunshine...extreme heat not so much.
Though I've had to remind myself that I grew up with hotter heat. Odd how our perceptions change.

Pasta, I remember being in Ibiza back in the late 60s during a heatwave in temperatures in the 100s. I enjoyed it! (Hippy times!). I too like sunshine, but not high temperatures.
Same here, oil tank by the trees and dense forest at the bottom of the field. We're on the Kerry Way for walkers. Hope the tourists take care with their ciggies and water bottles.

That must have been terrifying when you discovered what had happened MissT. So unsettling. Let's hope for lots of rain and no thunder and lightning.
Lottie, I can fully understand you worrying about the lovely deer. At least you can help by making sure they can get plenty of water to drink on your land.

Can't wait for next week, it's cooling down - roll on.

Shirley, we will probably end up with every thing eaten, but the deer are more important to us. We have lots of water in pots and pans spread about, and keeping the little pond topped up. Apples are dropping everywhere. I hope deer like apples!!! Hubby is as soft about animals as I am, if not softer.
People who love and care about animals are the best imo. At times like this, wildlife need us more than ever. Good for you and your husband x
Question Author
It might prove a bit difficult if they bring all their mates down from the wood!! X
Field just went up near us. Fantastic response by fire brigade and the farmer.
All safe, BM?
Question Author
It's all so worrying
As Canary had said the firemen are hero's
Stay safex
All safe. They had it under control in minutes. The farmer happened to see it whilst he was moving some equipment. He did warp speed 10 to get to it whilst calling 999 and ploughed in some fire breaks pdq.
Question Author
Wonderful. Husband is good friends with the farmer. We at least have his phone number
Thank goodness he was able to act quickly.
