There is evidence that sanctions are having no effect on Russia.

The collspse of the Rouble was widely predicted and expected. In reality the Rouble is the best performing currency in 2022 and rising and stronger than ever.

Sanctions advocate/activist finds evidence that sanctions work. In other shock news. There's no evidence they work, or exist, in Saudi Arabia or China.

Gromit, I may be wrong, but you seem to be most happy when things are bad for Britain & the West.
Is that the case?

That is most certainly the case Khandro. I post a few facts exposing the duplicity, and irresponsible opportunism of the Chinese, but instead of condemning that behaviour he uses it to gloat about the discomfort and unease it is liable to cause in the free democracies. He is obviously either "ill" or fallacious.
80 Russians dead and 220 wounded in massive rocket attack in Brylivka, Kherson.

Just thought I’d mention it ;-)
scuttle,scuttle ^ I rest my case.
lankeela: Very interesting article :0)

Eh, what?
I'm probably being tchno-ignorant again, but, please how do I get Lankeela's article translated into English (or French or German)?
The Russians are tough people who can queue outside of a shop for 3 days, just to buy a loaf of bread. They can handle sanctions.

Sonnenfield thinks the opposite;

‘The Russians are tough people who can queue outside of a shop for 3 days, just to buy a loaf of bread’

Erm….you think they have a choice if they want to live? That’s not being tough, that’s survival.
Yes, it is. And that's my point. They have been there before.
Ah, ok.
The delight in scores of deaths and injuries is unedifying.

Khandro,
// Sonnenfield thinks the opposite //

Forgive my ignorance, who the feck is Sonnenfield ?

I’m not saying he is wrong, he speaks a lot of sense, just wondering why he gets a voice, and why I should take what he says as true?
“The delight in scores of deaths and injuries is unedifying.”

Dear dear

OK, I found Jeffrey Sonnenfield, a Yale Professor. He makes some good points, so thanks for posting Khandro.

Thank you everyone for replying.

The Jenkins opinion piece in my question link received a lot of push back from Guardian readers.
Since posting I have tried to research my query, and there is a lot of contradictory opinion out there. I am no the wiser really.
I got it wrong too: it’s “Jenkin”

I’ll take the comprehensive Yale study over his musings any day
For one thing, the effects he lists at the start: high energy prices, high inflation, are nothing to do with sanctions.
Russia was waging war with gas shortages months before the recent invasion or any sanctions.
We are deluded if
A - we think they are a magic wand
but also
B - they are making Putin escalate his barbarity or that he much cares.
They’re a long game but one that must be played.
It’s also a question of conscience: how can we do business with such a regime in these circumstances?
