These are mid-term council elections and in the scheme of things mean nothing. I now live in a Tory council stronghold, and they’re utterly useless. I’ve also lived in a couple of Labour council strongholds, and they were also useless. Councils, no matter what their hue, are useless. They’re full of pompous prats full of their own self-

my own opinion is that local elections have scant relation to general elections. People vote on local issues. in my case we didnt have a local election this time. I would however have voted for my ward councillor, who supported us through a difficult planning permission submission and spoke on our behalf at the committee meeting. He represents the green party, who i would probably never vote for to be an MP

DH, yes but how do you explain the overall reduction in Labour's share of the vote? Winning more in London is great but if they are to form the next government they need a lot more in the wider country. The overall results show their share of the vote is falling. Only the Lib Non Dems can claim an improvement so far.

Its understandable as you don't live in the UK (ha ha) that your confused about these elections gulliver- there council elections not votes for seats in the House of Commons, but the results are sometimes a good indicator of the trend for the 2024 election

a winner today was one Lutfur Rahman, today elected mayor of Tower Hamlets - a political office from which he was unceremoniously removed for "corrupt and illegal practices" by an electoral court in 2015 and banned from public office for 5 years.

Gromit’s alarming numbers don’t really tell the true story - as per he’s gone for the sexy numbers.
11 councils have been lost by the Conservatives and 7 have been gained by Labour.
Not quite as sexy really, and certainly not the rout expected.
If this was meant to be a slap in the face, it’s like being hit by a mildly moist dish cloth.

Oh, I’m not so sure. Rita Chakrabati just said on the BBC that in total across the UK the Tories have lost 485 councillors.
A funny thing I just heard on TikTok is that this morning Johnson woke up in Westminster under a Labour council.
Apparently not even Blair took Westminster.
