//And are you old enough to remember the alternative comedy movement?//
Yeah. Upper class Yuni kids putting on dreadful working class accents and shouting profanities about Fatcher.
It must have got wearing for even stupid lefty kids after a while, didn't it?
Also - in terms of who the targets are in jokes in Family Guy, American Dad, and especially Curb Your Enthusiasm and Veep...you can hardly say that certain groups get omitted.

These are all amazing comedies (again - IMO...comedy is subjective) and they are truly, hideously, fantastically offensive.

The episode of Veep where ex-President Selina Myer's Presidental library is revealed where her mausoleum is in the shape of a...

..I literally cannot say it - this post would be deleted. You'd have to look it up.

Hilarious though.

Might watch it again tomorrow.
//Ahhh...I think I see what you mean now.

The problem is the lack of jokes about thick Irishmen, tight Scots, lazy blacks, dodgy Jews, horrible mother-in-laws etc.//

And there we have it. The casual, lazy insults aimed at the untermensch by the likes of you and your comedy heroes. Strange how we don't find it hilarious, innit.

But it gave us The Young Ones, French & Saunders, The Comic Strip, Ben Elton, Blackadder, Fry & Laurie, The Mary Whitehouse Experience, The Comedy Store...but more importantly it paved the way for a new generation of comedians who went onto bigger and better things.

Can't think of any upper class comedians...only a few middle class ones (Stephen Fry, Rowan Atkinson).
Spicerack

Okay...perhaps I misunderstood you when you wrote:

As long as you're punching down at the approved victims.

Who are the approved victims and who are the ones you can't do jokes about?

And out of interest - which comedians and comedy shows really make YOU laugh?
Spicerack

And I promise - there’s no ulterior move. I’m genuinely interested.
//Who are the approved victims.//
Trump, Trump supporters, the 'uneducated' (white)the unvaccinated(white)people who voted to leave the EU, any straight patriarchal man (white)
Basically white working class men.
// and who are the ones you can't do jokes about?//
Anyone on the Identity Politics list. I'm sure you know the list.

Many of the comedians/shows you've already mentioned amuse me.
Let's hope they stick around.
I'm sounding like an inverted snob but I just feel that all the avenues of social mobility for working class people are being closed down.
Spicerack

That certainly would be a shame.

Glad you enjoy those shows though.

I think all of them are awesome.
I can't see how anything will cancel comedy, it just changes along with what people think, want, like, which changes over the years
But, there is a problem with venues deciding on behalf of everyone else sometimes. Not because they can't sell enough tickets, or someone isn't popular enough, but because of a certain view they might have.
Leave it to the public to decide what they do or don't want, but refusing to put people on stage,is just censoring. There are lots mentioned here I personally don't like, loads of others I do... but I wouldn't cancel a comedian for being offensive, I just wouldn't go myself.
I watched a so-called comedian yesterday on Netflix and for some reason, people were roaring with laughter. Manning and Brown weren't as crude as this man. His name is Russel Howard, I think. Not memorable for his name then!
Howard is a Teddy bear. Manning, Brown, Davidson... had their day. Totally not my kind of thing, but each to their own.
10CS- Russell Howard is one of the best known stand ups in the country. Personally, I find him about as funny as root canal surgery, but he's hardly an unknown.
What is he best known for? If he's getting paid, then it's one hell of a con trick.
He's had a few shows, quiz shows, stand-up. A bit bland, but inoffensively and mildly amusing. Imv.
I'm sure his latest show on Netflix would offend many ABers if they watched it.
I'll have a look.
Lubricant or recalibrate? (If you don't mind me asking lol)
Trying Recalibrate, as the other is a series.
Realised I have seen it before. Brilliant:-)
Love this from the Russel Howard hour.
