ummm were people out on NYE then.....
Rome is probably full of cats and dogs and bunny rabbits and rabbits. No reported fatalities of those.

Dying of fright actually means they had heart attacks. Even if a bang did scare the birds, it is unlikely that thousands simultaneously had heart attacks. More likely a toxic gas or pollutant caused this.
as mamy said maybe poison, dreadful i know...
"BirdLife's research has revealed that an estimated 25 million birds are illegally killed or taken each year across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Caucasus"
I believe it's prevalent in France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, probably lots of places.
Nothing in that article to prove fireworks were to blame. Anyway, I love fireworks.
i know that a bird of prey was engaged in getting rid of the pigeons in Trafalgar square, not sure if they all went, or indeed if its still the case.
I have seen the video of this and it was thousands of starlings who were startled by the explosions and disorientated and they flew into windows and high voltage cables and that is how they died.
prudie as i said i did across this in Greece, i have been to Malta but it was along time ago..
why only starlings, surely they must have other species around the place.
// As of 24 December 2020, the Italian Veterinary Authorities confirmed the positivity to the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus of subtype H5 in wild birds. Below the updated list of the HPAI viruses of the subtype H5 (H5N1, H5N5 and H5N8) as characterized in cloacal, tracheal and feather swabs from different wild birds species shot in hunting areas, or cloacal and tracheal swabs from wild birds found muribund or sampled intra vitam in northeast Italy. //

And the method for preventing bird flu is the culling of birds.
emmie you must have seen how starlings fly in flocks of hundreds. They all take flight together and some were unfortunate enough to be killed, but there would have been many more of them that weren't.
wouldn't that be all types of birds though, not just starlings
Barsel
They did not die of flying into windows.
as Prudie pointed out many millions of songbirds are eaten in these countries including Italy by the looks of it. Not that makes it right,
emmie, watch the video I've just posted of the birds who were startled by the fireworks.
// The fact that from around a million to 5 millions of starlings choose the city of Rome as their wintering ground might appear as a blessing, but there is another side of it. To view such a numerous birds' congregation hurling in unison over Roman domes is great, but remember that birds also have their natural needs, and it's not very pleasant to live in a city drowned in starlings' droppings. Besides, birds' poop corrodes monuments and creates slippery roads, which leads to accidents. It would be more bearable if the birds stopped by for a short period, but this is the entire winter, and sometimes even longer. Therefore, to some Romans the starlings' visit is, to be honest, unwanted. //

Cull.
i couldn't watch any more of the video, sorry but not sure what to think.
The video shows quite clearly what happened, I'm not sure why people are unwilling to accept what you can see with your own eyes.
