Where I live we have been in tier 3 for 8 weeks including a month long lockdown.

But new cases are rising alarmingly, up 100 on the previous week.

Soon everyone will be in tier 4. But it just isn’t working.

It's the schools - plain and simple.

I wish the Government (both in Ireland and in the UK) would treat us like grown-ups and admit that opening the schools was a political act.

They were simply taking a decision that the inevitable rise in infections was the lesser of two evils when compared to keeping the schools closed - all the rubbish about schools being a safe environment was simply a load of cobblers - it was never going to work. They've been desperately fiddling the figures to imply that transmission was via clusters arising in private households, when everyone with an ounce of common-sense (and local knowledge) can see that it all exploded from the mingling of households at school.

It now looks like they may be about to do what was needed in the first place - keep the schools open full-time for exam years only, and let the rest attend at a reduced frequency (perhaps one day a week) - that way the schools will have space/time to do proper preventive procedures. It will still be risky, but much less so.

You stop it with a vaccine, not a coffee.
who said a coffee would stop it. I merely pointed out that i could see two different people two separate places, for a chat or maybe a coffee.
vaccine rollout is what it is, my friends are in their 40's and who know when they will have theirs.
i am not sure when i can have mine even. Maybe in the next few months, i just don;t know
Seriously , I don't think anyone does Emmie
no bobbi they don't know. And even if i have mine friends family won;t get theirs to who knows when
I'm really sick of getting up to all this moaning about covid.

I do not believe there is wide spread ignoring of the rules. I don’t see it. Police figures do not confirm it. Other than the odd news report, there isn’t mass law breaking or public disobedience. Breaches are isolated incidents and rare.

So it is very unfortunate that the figure for new cases is going the wrong way. After 8 weeks of tier 3, people are weary. The lack of a positive ‘reward’ for our subservience is disheartening. Everyone is pinning their hope on the vaccine, but that could take a year to work.
it is perhaps partly because the new variant is more infectious? Particularly among the young, it seems.

//Numbers of cases are soaring around the country as the coronavirus variant continues to spread rapidly, particularly among young people. A daily rate of 32,725 cases was reported at the end of last week, a 46.6% increase on the previous week.//

No, emmie... and I think tiers and "lockdowns" may make a little difference. But there are so many exempt. Like I said to emmie (I think) the other day. There are still keyworkers, schools, colleges, universities, shops, essential services and so on excluded. It seems more people are continuing than not? So "lockdown" seems to be overstating it a lot.
lockdown hasn;t worked has it. with the best will in the world guys you simply can;t make people jump when they won't. Some are exempt from wearing a mask like boaty, there must be others.
As I said before, emmie, I wouldn't even describe it as a lockdown, with so many continuing to work and go to schools, colleges etc.
It's a half-hearted effort to keep some people in- but not enough. So as soon as the rules are relaxed even slightly, the virus hasn't gone anywhere and just carries on.
Prudie.
I'm in Hampshire, we are tier 4, the five or six lads I mentioned who are hanging around almost certainly come from different households, that means that they are not only putting their own health at risk, but they are putting their, parents, siblings etc at risk, also the people that are passing them in the street, or sit near them on the bus.
Its an ongoing problem that we have here and nothing seems to be done, its so frustrating when I've been stuck indoors all over the Christmas alone, not being able to see my children and grandchildren and these youths think its some kind of game!
pixie people have to go to work, kids to school, is the answer to shut everything down, it just isn;t possible
It's obvious that NYC doesn't have much of a lock-down. I can't believe it...They're preparing for the annual count-down on New Year' Eve in Times Square, and thousands of people will be there! See this: https://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/?cam=tsrobo1
It isn't possible. But I'm not also surprised that these half-hearted measures aren't having enough of an effect. Just now, we seem to have the worst of both worlds.
People are losing employment, jobs, freedom, mental health support ... and every time it is slightly relaxed, others die.
SaintPeyer who did you report the 6 youths too?
they are dying anyway pixie, with whatever restrictions in place.
my family are now tier 4, but one brother is staying over with one daughter, and her family, they have in essence broken the rules. But i am not going to say you shouldn't, it none of my business
Draconian or lax, movement restrictions and shutdowns only delay things.

Admit we have to live with it and move on.
