Alcoholism is not a disease. You cannot catch alcoholism from someone else (unlike AIDS), it is not a virus or a bacteria, it is a self inflicted state of dependence brought on by too much of the bottle.

That said I am sad at the death of Mr Best although I am too young to remember his playing days it brings home the fact that no matter how much we succeed in life there bad things everpresent that we have to stay away from to prevent an untimely end.

Erm...but lung cancer is a disease, brought on by self-inflicted abuse of cigarettes?

Youre absolutely right Buddy. Weve disagreed over issues and argued our cases, and never has it been anything other than friendly banter, each taking the mickey out of the other. No comment was ever meant or taken to heart. Youve pulled my leg and Ive pulled yours, therefore Im saddened and sorry at the level of abuse that is being directed out by someone who has hijacked your ID, and not read these posts.

Yes, cancer is a disease. Being addicted to alcohol isn't.

The finest footballer of his generation and arguably one of the greatest footballers ever. I saw him playing at every home game at Old Trafford and a good few away games. When he had the ball it was pure exciting heart thumping football. They say all geniuses are flawed in some way. He lived life to the full and not many of us can say that.

I had the privilege of meeting him about 15 years ago. A more generous and gentle man you could not want to meet.

This is a very sad day for me.

As long as the game is played, he will be remembered with fondness by true football fans.

I am not only saddened by his death, but by the tragic way he went.

Whatever the arguments,he was in my mind one of the greatest footballers ever..and I for one will miss him.

Rest in peace 'Bestie'

"I have nothing to declare but 200 Rothmans and a litre of Smirnoff"

Legend.

What is the question??????
I am beginning to get fed up with people who think that this website is for talking about news items rather than asking questions.
If the AB Ed is happy to allow it, then perhaps you'd be better off turning a blind eye too bernardo!

I feel so proud that I was of the time wen I could see him live - on TV okay, but every Sat'day night with him was a feast.

The guy has died, he has died an uncomfy death- who area ny of us to say anything, to criticise? We know nothing. Not even those who think they know because they have suffered too.

He has gone and we are minus one George Best. The media must be really pi$$ed and bernardo, for sympathy questions aren't required.

A little sympathy, please, for someone did something, despite himself.

And when asked if he would have lived his life any differently....No was the answer.....Live by the sword..die by the sword...RIP
He was just a human being with all the vulnerabilities that go with that. Who's to say what we would have done in his position.
So?
I hope you all realise that had he got better he would have left the hospital and carried on where he left off in the pub drinking!! I am sorry he has died as he was a great talent but he was also his own worse enemy..spare your sympathy for those that need it..people that cant help being ill..and havnt abused their bodys..

he must have been gutted - hurray for 24 hour opening times and booo he bloody well snuffs it - gods irony.

But he should always be remembered as one of Englands fines alcoholics. pubs owners everywhere will miss him dearly.

George Best was a pathetic old drunk who was good at kicking a ball for a very short time in his life.
Now it seems as though he is about to be made into a Saint "Saint George Patron Saint of Alcoholics" He was given a second chance and ****** it up against the wall.
Some poor person with a wife and kids probably died so that george could recieve that liver. what did he do start drinking again! I have no sympathy for him at all. I am sick of hearing about 24 hour drinking and the trouble it will cause, and here we have a famous Alcoholic Glorified and portrayed as some kind of a hero...pathetic crap!!!!!!

He was just a man, why the fuss. It's like the Queen mother, they said the nations most important grand mother. Well, Everybody's grandmother is the most important. Get over it! And spend your emotions on your own family!

George Best kicked a ball for a living. I respect my bin men more. Salt of the earth. They earned it!

I am not sad at all someone probably died when they chose George Best to have that liver and look what he did to it
