Just heard on Radio 2 (11 a.m) news that the High Court have declared the recent ban on the Extinction Rebellion protests illegal. Possibly paving the way for hundreds of 'unlawful arrest' claims.

Fantastic. What a palaver. We can only blame the conservative government for their actions.
aw gawd, more morons on our capital's street,
this is just taking up policing that should be catching criminals, not having to marshal thousands of protesters.
I wonder how many of these eco warriors have cars and get about using petrol or diesel vehicles, or take their kids out of school for that longed for holiday. I despair.
If our learned M'luds wish to continue with anarchy ,civil disobedience, criminal damage and general publish mischief visiting our streets then perhaps it is high time the authorities took a tougher stance and introduce these n'er do wells to tear gas and water cannon.
The learned judges have indicated that the police already have powers to prevent this mayhem continuing and they were acting above their remit. Ok lets take the gloves off and spoil the protester's day by other legal means
The general law abiding public going about their daily business and commute have clearly demonstrated that they are sick to the back teeth of these idiots and if the police are impotent they will deal with it themselves. If there is a next time some idiot might find him or herself under the train rather than being hauled off the top of it.
its one of the reasons i don't out to the centre of town, and if i have to i try and stay away from the areas they will be in.

If those who were carted off to the nearest nick do have the right to sue for wrongful arrest, you can bet your bottom dollar they will do so. It would probably create almost as much publicity for them as the actual demos.

Ta for the link mamy, by the way:-)
Why should anyone feel a prisoner in their own city and be prevented from going to work?
retro they shouldn't, shops, tourist industry, and the like must all be suffering. I do believe that climate change is an important topic and should be debated round the world, not just in London. Why don't some of these people protest outside India, China's Embassies, they are two countries that have the most shameful record on pollution and population explosion.
Welcome Ken.
So causing congestion, criminal damage, and public nuisance is ok now
catc, looks like it doesn't it.
Can't even stop antisocial behaviour now. This country is going, or has gone, to the dogs. One can only hope for a successful appeal, and ASAP parliament amending any flawed existing laws and their interpretation so everything is clear.
No, it is not OK. The judgement does not say it is OK. The judgement focuses on the fact that the Police used the wrong powers. Apparently, there are other powers that could have been used although they are outwith the scope of the judgement.

ER get no sympathy from me - they cause chaos and it doesnt warm me to them or their cause. But if the state is going to control such things it is fundamental that they do so properly.
If existing laws would have achieved the same result lawfully I'd suggest that it's fundamental that the reason used be allowed to be replaced without gain for those who have still done something deemed wrong. Bet it doesn't work like that though.
