No link as they seem to want to keep it low profile but it looks like Sainsburys have taken the decision not to sell fireworks this year. If you or someone you know are affected by the constant barrage of noise, mess and smoke that happens at this season (and when did Firework Night become Firework season?) then you might like to comment on their facebook page or website? Hopefully another step in the right direction.

Much as I would love to say something to spath, I realise it would be a complete waste of time so I won't waste my time and energy. This is just to let anyone know who might be interested in contacting Sainsburys. I wrote them an email to congratulate them for taking this stance, but unfortunately, it has come back as having the wrong email address. I left the s off so...

i go along with TTT, let there be organised displays only. Sick to death of hearing whizz bangs and the like so early on
Just gone back in, and there's fragments of sausage meat all over the ceiling. Dangerous really.

//Smog in London was caused from burning excessive amounts of coal during the lead up to the industrial revolution. I'm unsure they compare.//

I was actually talking about 1950's London when I was a child not the build up to the Industrial Revoulution. Even I am not that old.
What do you think about all the smoke from fireworks and bonfires rising into the atmosphere then Spath? Does it damage the ozone layer or not?

"Does it damage the ozone layer or not?"

Yes, to a certain extent.
Retro, that link though.. says

"The city had been paralysed by swirling fogs since the Napoleonic era, 150 years earlier."

Britain started our industrial revolution in the 18th century, so it certainly has an effect on London's smog.

its not just the ozone layer. Inhaling the smoke and airborn debris is not safe for any of us and is particularly harmful to people with asthma, COPD and so on. Again one night a year, the effects may not be significant but when the "season" starts just before halloween and goes on until mid november, with another lot at New Year, must surely increase the risks.
That is what retro is getting at regarding the smog that killed like 12 thousand peoples
I used to have the pleasure of spending Bastille Day in France where it seemed to be a national pastime to hurl bangers at strangers.
Personally I was never that fussed about them tho they were banned in N Ireland for many years anyway.
“Being able to buy fireworks shows the power of the people?”
Seriously? An argument of which the NRA would be proud.
not a great comparison, ichkeria, the prime function of fireworks isn't killing things, it's enjoying bright lights.
Just read your answer at 09.39. Really made me laugh. Thanks teacake44 for brightening up my day.
I don't think anyone has mentioned the danger of fireworks. Every year children are burnt or maimed by an exploding firework. There will always be someone who thinks it's a good idea to push one through someone's letterbox and possibly cause a fire. I'm thinking of doing a peaceful protest in Tesco by standing in front of the cabinet that houses the fireworks with a placard saying, 'Fireworks may be hazardous to your health'.:-)

as well as contacting Sainsburys to thank them, people may like to contact other supermarkets and suggest that they follow Sainsbury's example?
We should ban alcohol first. Thousands of deaths every year. But most of you enjoy (a little too much) drinking so that'll be different, won't it.
woofgang, just to say thank you for this thread, I hadn't heard it on the news or anywhere else, and at your suggestion I've just emailed Sainsbury's to thank them. If anyone else wants their email address it's

//We should ban alcohol first.//

No. Not that Spicey. I haven't touched a drop of tea since the Boston Party and I know what fish do in water.
Thanks for the BA woofgang.x
What’s also good is that our local Sainsburys has got rid of its single use plastic bags in favour of paper ones
You have to laugh! Where did the term "Firework Night" come from, woofgang? Did you invent it? There's no such thing.
JNO: I wasn't asking that. The implication of the OP seems to be that Firework Night can be ANY night, There is no mention of Guy Fawkes, Bonfire Night or Nov 5th.
That is good news. It will also mean that I do not have to have my annual face to face confrontation with my local Sainsburys manager this year. :-)

I shall, however, ask for him, to thank him.
