Time to build more prisons then.
Why do you have to always have to put a spin in things? Do you think 'lefties' like criminals?
He's certainly hit the ground running. I think it's quite impressive.
wouldn't crime be reduced if the criminals actually served the sentence they were given instead of being released early to re-offend?
ael, in the link he is promising to stop early release of prisoners.
Boris certainly means business but you would expect him to make such positive announcements.

He has put staff on 'red alert' for an autumn General Election and with the flimsiest of majorities he needs to make some quick gains.

It is fortunate that Labour are in such disarray but Boris will not be complacent.

Judgment surely has to be reserved regarding his announcements. The electorate have heard and seen enough in the past and many voters will not be won over easily.

He cannot afford to put all his eggs in one basket despite so much to address (and prove outcomes) where Law & Disorder is concerned.

He will know that if he gets Brexit wrong it will all collapse around him like a house of cards.

if he fulfills his promises he'll be the best pm since Walpole

'If' indeed...

I wish him well, it's a massive undertaking...
ummmm
Of course lefties don't believe in law and order and would like to see anarchy and lawlessness rule the streets

Only those on the right have morals
You should know that

/// Why do you have to always have to put a spin in things? Do you think 'lefties' like criminals? ///

I think you will find if you read the report that it was Boris Johnson and not I that put that particular spin on things.

/// Taking aim at his critics, Mr Johnson acknowledges that stop and search is controversial and that 'Left-wing criminologists will object.' ///

But what I do believe is the fact that the lefties hate Boris Johnson more than they do criminals.

The Leftie Mayor of London announced that this Government is the most Right-Wing government we have ever had, if being Right-Wing was somehow criminal.
You are so right with your last posting AOG. Even being quite moderate with views is, in the eyes of the lefties, being right wing and yes, right wingers are treated like criminals these days by the media. Boris has done the right thing.
Tough is good as long as a) it's applied fairly, b) it prevents further criminal acts, c) is applied sensibly with none of the zero tolerance/no room for those applying it to use initiative, etc.

We'll we if it's also tough on the causes of crime.
...see...
We should bring back birching for low-level crime instead of community sentences & fines that don't get paid.
he's even planning to restore the 20,000 officers to replace the ones who've vanished under the Tories. Obviously Cameron and May thought it important to save the money. So who's going to pay for them to come back again? (Bearing in mind they'll all have to be trained.) And new prisons on top of that! We'll have to see which magical money tree the new chancellor locates.
jno//Obviously Cameron and May thought it important to save the money. So who's going to pay for them'//
I think you just answered your own question.
Boris just seems to be saying what he thinks people want to hear. As jno says, where's this magic money tree for all he plans? Full of wind and ....
dannyk, the answer is partly "me", of course, but it's also "All those voters who support the Tories because they promise to cut taxes". This may prove a tough circle to square.
If I understand correctly, the UK will then have an increasing rate of incarceration whereas the European trend is downward. The UK's re-offending rate is very high (roughly three times) compared to the lowest in Europe, Norway's. Norway has very low incarceration rates. Re-offending rates are seen as the best measure of how well the judicial and penal systems work. Boris' experiment will presumably show whether re-offending goes down, if it does then it will be the reverse of observations/expectations in the UK and elsewhere. If that happens then it will demonstrate how different the UK is. If the reverse happens then it will also, but in a different way, demonstrate how different the UK is. What will simultaneously perhaps be demonstrated is how votes will swing, either as hoped for or not.
