Because, bobbi, as it says in the article 'the raised index finger is a symbol of Tawhid, meaning “the unity and uniqueness of God as creator and sustainer of the Universe”. The gesture is a common part of Islamic prayer. So to describe it as an ISIS salute is incorrect.

auntie failed to check it out, and yes, this may be because of lack of diversity - what you see on screen may be far removed from the actuality behind the scenes.

The statement was not wrong, but it only told half the story. The salute can have more than one meaning, so the BBC was right to set the matter straight.

Very poor on behalf of the BEEB they need to get their act together on diversity. Part of the problem is confusing serious journalism with entertainment - this programme should have been presented by someone with a thorough knowledge of islam and middle eastern politics not a pretty face white saviour like Stacey Dooley.
