Does anyone have a rough idea how much it would cost to change the roof of my hatchback from red to black?

Cars are being stolen in my area to use in robberies and muggings usually with the plates changed. I thought it would make me car less likely to be stolen if it were more distinctive

Quite a lot. Not worth it.
It's not a simple job. The whole car has to be masked up, then sprayed, then baked and then they have to finish it. Unless your car is brand new....honestly, waste of money.
Ummmm's right, a costly idea - stick a decal on the roof instead.

I think about the decals but aren't they easy to get off? I suppose I could vinyl wrap the whole thing in multi coloured spots :D
Get some eye lashes for your head lights :-)
Paint your initials on the roof.
I got my sons GF some car kitty things so she has kittens and flowers all over her car. Try it :-D
Get an “old fashioned” steering wheel locking device. Far cheaper. It won’t be 100% safe but will encourage the scroats to pick easier targets.
Less likely to be stolen if it's more visibly secure...I'd spend the money on something like a Disklok, or similar.
They need the key to start it. Make sure they can't get hold of it.

I've already got a steering wheel lock on it.

Years ago I saw a fab car, the owner had used a tennis ball to dab multi coloured circles all over the paintwork. I might give that a go.
Think of the resale value when you get rid of the car.
Get it wrapped instead, much cheaper
I know the guy with the tennis ball car.

He only put it in for a service.
Aced that one didn’t ya

Made me laugh, anyway
Going by a quote I had to spray my rear bumper that had a 2 inch deep scratch. ( fairly new car ). In the region of £200+
Wrapping costs in the region of £120+ per yard just for materials.
