// Renewable capacity has tripled in past five years, even faster growth than the ‘dash for gas’ of the 1990s.
The result is that between July and September, the capacity of wind, solar, biomass and hydropower reached 41.9 gigawatts, exceeding the 41.2GW capacity of coal, gas and oil-fired power plants.
In the past year, coal capacity has fallen by one-quarter, and there are only six coal-fired plants left in the UK. //
It will probably be put on the back burner...
//the capacity of wind, solar, biomass and hydropower reached 41.9 gigawatts//

capacity, yes, but actuality? if the sun doesn't shine or the wind doesn't blow, are the government going to sue God for breach of contract, or hit Him with a green energy tax?
OK mushroom, actual generation not capacity:

// The amount of electricity generated in the UK last year fell to its lowest level in a quarter century, Carbon Brief analysis shows.

At the same time, output from renewable sources rose to another record high, generating an estimated 33% of the UK total in 2018. In combination with nuclear, low-carbon sources contributed 53% of UK generation in 2018, with the share from fossil fuels at its lowest ever. //

The greens and eco maniacs wont be happy until they have destroyed the western economies because as I have said before, the vast majority are anti-capitalists.

It's quite revealing how frequently you support your arguments with unpleasant unjustified epithets.
maggiebee, did you consider an induction hob? I Much prefer it to gas hobs and of course it is much more efficient than the standard ceramic hob and electric plate - and a lot faster to respond to the controls. Wouldn't have any other sort, unless I had to have a pacemaker.

Gromit, the bit you missed is that Q3 2018 (latest on Ofgen) shows gas generating 38.3488% of electrical supply. And this is about getting shot of gas!

And are you pro Nuclear now?
So it may happen in six years. Not really news to panic about. It's probably a good thing in terms of helping save the planet. We will have to change our ways if we want to leave our kids somewhere fit to live.
“It [fusion-produced electricity] will be so cheap that it will not be metered , just a small 'service charge'.”

Yes Eddie. I recall exactly the same claims being made when North Sea gas was discovered.

At this very moment one-third (33.18%) of the nation's electricity supply is produced by burning gas. It is the single biggest source of electricity generation and exceeds that of the next two most popular - nuclear (15.81%) and wind (15.7%) - combined. Preventing residents of new homes burning the trifling amount their gas hobs and boilers may consume (and presumably making them depend principally on electricity produced from burning gas) is futile.
NJ, do you know what proportion of the nation's gas use is domestic?
No idea without looking.
I hate cooking on electric stoves.
As an aside l, like Maggiebee would not return to electric hob, gas is so much more controllable.

Also after you have used gas to produce your electricity, and associated losses in transmitting afore said electricity, gas must ultimately be cleaner, until it runs out.
hc4361, my only experience with ceramic hob was not good. When removing some egg cups from cupboard, lost grip of one, it bounced on work top then ceramic hob, cracking it.
just get one of these for your stove, maggiebee

I love my gas hob, it's fab !
Electric boilers cost around 33% more to run than gas...something to look forward to.
I've recently finished building a new house, which I've decided to move into. Because of its size and the amount of glass, neither oil nor gas could be used since both exceed permitted CO2 levels.

My air-source heat pump produces 4kw of heat for every 1kw of power consumed. In effect, electricity for a quarter of the price.

I'm no chef, but the induction hob is very easy to control. It's actually very responsive. The bonus is that I don't have to clean a greasy gas hob either.
Electric hobs, electric ovens, electric heating, electric cars ...all linked to remotely operated smart meters..just a thought :-)
