Scum whoever they are, we need to find them and understand who they are and what the motive was behind it. It seems quite organised so I think the story is deeper than plain vandalism.

Thst assumes CCTV is trained on the statues. I'd have thought there was. Don't tend to like authorities spying on citizens, but there are the occasional locations where an argument for a camera could be made (if the resolution was good enough to be of use anyway).

I suppose it's possible that it's one of the few parts of London not covered by CCTV.
In view of the fact it's been vandalised several times in the last few years, I doubt it.
