It seems that you need to be much more careful about the use of irony and hyperbole - even in a suposedly private exchange of emails with someone you thought was a friend ...

Twitter is (of course) in meltdown as snowflake vegans with malfunctioning (or missing) humour circuits ramp up the faux outrage.

I'll be really offended if he has to resign and will withdraw my custom ... unless they send me free meat parcels as compensation ...

As Ludwig said, this is not about having a sense of humour, its about the lack of judgement in replying to a request linked to his job. He was replying to a suggestion sent in for some Vegan and Vegetarian recipes to be published in the Waitrose Food Magazine. I have no problem with the subject, just the context in which it was written.
Well, emmie, since "...I'm with him, shame he has stepped down," perhaps YOU can explain the thing about accusing vegans (probably includes vegetarians) of hypocrisy?

BB
i find it sad the amount of disparaging and nasty comments directed at vegans/veggies. We'd all be a lot healthier if we reduced the amount of meat we consume and ate more veg and so would the planet. Live and let live or try to...

(If) he said what he said as a "joke" in a private email - never put anything in writing unless you want to be judged on it by the faceless hordes of the internet - would be the lesson I'd take from that.
many vegetarians, vegans so often appear to be hypocritical, they do condemn those who eat meat, whereas for the most part i haven't seen much evidence of the other way round. I find it galling that he has stepped down, and yes i am aware that one should be a little more circumspect in one's writing of e mails.
Well, as a vegetarian of 38 years (I'm a lot older than that, but that's when I stopped eating meat), I don't condemn anyone.

I do ARGUE with meat-eaters, though, particularly the "ooo aren't the fluffy little lambs so cute" variety (when the next day the fluffy little lambs are served up for dinner). I don't mind the 'farmer' mentality - just stock, raise them, eat them. Don't like it, but there is a philosophical difference.
emmie // many vegetarians, vegans so often appear to be hypocritical, they do condemn those who eat meat, whereas for the most part i haven't seen much evidence of the other way round. //

Seriously? Most meat eaters take the mick out of vegetarians and vegans, they seem to be fair game to some.

If this was a comment made on a private FB page I could not be less bothered. This comment was made as a reply to a business email and as such showed lack of judgement and hopefully he has learned a lesson.
I eat a lot less meat than I used to, love veggie food but human beings have evolved to be omnivores. I do find it amusing when people almost open a conversation with I'm a vegan by the way. My response is you'll be having your tea black then... sorry don't keep soy in the flat.
well he has and stepped down, what more should he do i wonder.
^^^^^^ to Emmie

He should apologise.
The inquest was tedious
One by one? Has no-one heard of the machine gun?
oooh douglas now you have gone and done it......
I'll be tendering my resignation by the end of business today.
Sitwell, well-known as one of the critics regularly invited in to taste the contestants' creations on TV cookery show Masterchef, later issued his own apology, stating: "I love and respect people of all appetites, be they vegan, vegetarian or meat eaters - which I show week in week out through my writing, editing and broadcasting.

"I apologise profusely to anyone who has been offended or upset by this."
It was a private email though, hope you are all pleased he's had to grovel and step down so that's the end of it.
I think I will go to the papers with a comment I saw on here the other day - I like children but I couldn't eat a whole one. Disgusting, disgraceful, horrific blah blah
Prudie he only had to grovel and stand down because he made a gross error of judgement. I doubt anyone posting on here had an influence on his departure from Waitrose Mag.
I love and respect people of all appetites, be they vegan, vegetarian or meat eaters

he's lying. His email shows clearly he doesn't respect vegans (I don't know how he feels about the others). Talking about force-feeding or killing them isn't to be taken literally, but it does share the angry language that passes for debate these days and that people never use when talking of those they respect. And the minute he starts mentioning hypocrisy, you can tell he's entirely serious in his disrespect for them.

As AL says, that's crazy talk for someone who's supposed to be producing a food magazine, and responding to writers making pitches: don't diss your readers.
Glad the idiot's stepped down.
Don't call it 'killing'; it's 'putting out of their misery' !
You can joke all you want about veggie bangers (et tedious cetera) but call me a hypocrit and I’ll want to speak to you...
