He’s an actor, you don’t need to be the same as your character.

How about the bold Jack declaring that, at the moment, he identifies as homosexual. Seems like a plan.

Adopts High Court Judge voice ...

"Who exactly is Mr Jack Whitehall"?
-- answer removed --
Well, that's certainly an imaginative reason, spath...

I'm struggling to find a source for this but I swear that, during the filming of Being John Malkovich, the director told the actor playing John Malkovich how to play a certain role. The actor then said, "but John Malkovich wouldn't do that." The director insisted that John Malkovich certainly would do it... which, of course, rather bemused John Malkovich, who was playing himself.

Your original suggestion rather reminds me of that incident. Wish I could find the source.
The whole point of a pantomime Dame though is that everyone knows and expects her to be a bloke. Just as Dick Whittington is expected to be someone with a ... er cat
In all honesty I was under the impression that Mr Whitehall was gay anyway.
Seems he's fooled me and just been living life leading up to this part.
I don't think Gandalf was gay in Lord of the Rings but don't remember complaints on behalf of 'straight' people that he was being played by a gay actor.
Gandalf wasn't any sexuality so idk why that is even remotely relevant.
Yes, they are acting. Best person for the role.
Was his beard genuine though, jim? Surely someone with a real beard could have been found.
Jack Whitehall is playing a man. A man who in this case is homosexual. There are gay people playing 'straight' roles on TV- eg Daniel Barlow character on Corrie.
//Pantomime dames don't come into it//

Tell that to Christopher Biggins.
And also on Corrie two straight girls playing lesbians.
It does seem remarkable that Hollywood does not have any gay actors.

Remember the first lesbian kiss on Brookside, Anna Friel isn't a real lesbian as far as I know.

so clearly HE wouldnt be suitable for the gay part.

This topic frequently crops up in The Stage . Opinions differ quite considerably (as here) and tend to be inconclusive. I have mixed feelings, after all actors "act" which essentially means "play any part" - but sometimes casting seems a bit adrift in plays which I see.
So, gay actors should only be given roles of gay people then?
