Zacs, This ever-present urge to undermine/criticise/abandon Britain and British to whatever comes along never ceases to amaze me. Maybe I’m just not trendy or right on enough, but one thing I do know. You rarely appreciate what you have until you lose it so be careful what you wish for - and if that puts me on a par with aog in this instance, so be it. Looking at...

/// When people are born in Britain, are they not British? ///

It gets confusing when some insist on hanging on to their roots i.e. Afro Caribbean, Afro British, etc.

Not like those who hark back to their Angle and Saxon roots?
THECORBYLOON, Who does that?

ummmm

I'd also like to know what is British culture. I have England born Indian friends, Jamaican, obviously English, and I'm Irish....the only thing different between us is the food we eat.

Wait until Ireland play India, Jamaica or England, then see who they support.
Folk often refer to Anglo-Saxons so why should Afro-Caribbean or Afro-British be confusing? All refer to an individual's roots?

I don't think I mentioned 'British' culture, since the British Isles consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and each have their own specific culture.
Can a male immigrant who has been granted British citizenship and has chosen to live in England, call himself a true Englishman?
//Folk often refer to Anglo-Saxons //

Yes ... in history lessons.

British is a nationality, English is a sensibility.

If you have a British passport, then you’re British.

There are no Angles or Saxons now neither are there any Vikings, at least I haven't see them included in any government forms.
Here’s a useful thought exercise - is Oprah Winfrey American?

You might call her African American, in the same way that Martin Scorsese describes himself as Italian American - but they are both American.

What I’m hearing from certain quarters is talk of immigrants.

I’d be interested to hear what black Britons born in this country are to be called - especially as we are now at a point where their parents are most likely born in the UK too.
AOG, if you don’t know what British culture is, how can you make the statement that we are losing it?

People who are English are from the country of England. On the other hand, British people are people who live in Great Britain (Britain) and the UK. All though everyone in the UK has a British citizenship they have different nationalities.
Another interesting thought is that some of the people who demand that black and Asian people integrate, simultaneously claim that they aren’t British.

Weird juxtaposition there...
It’s not Great Britain and the UK.

It’s the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island.

Being British, it’s something I know.

Perhaps when some settle down and adapt to British values and stop the constant referrals to how badly they have been treated in the past, perhaps then and only then can they be considered true British.
Which Northern Island?.
"All though everyone in the UK has a British citizenship they have different nationalities"
Um....

Do you mean that they should be completely without complaint?

When others are free to stand up for what they feel passionate about, black people should ‘know their place’?
AOG, if you don’t know what British culture is, how can you make the statement that we are losing it?
