//Closed migrant centres are to be set up in EU states to process asylum claims under a deal reached after marathon talks at a leaders summit in Brussels.

The centres, hosted on a voluntary basis, would determine who are illegal migrants "who will be returned".//

A good idea?

Pardon my ignorance but isn't this just an expansion of what they already have, to ease pressure on existing ones? If so it seems prudent.
They had very little choice really, they have to do something, it's getting ridiculous. Italy were correct to force the issue.

Krom, are the existing centres 'closed'? I don't believe they are - but I might be wrong. Those proposed are referred to in the article as the EU's new migrant prisons
I think by "closed" they mean that the migrants will be detained in them pending processing of their application for asylum etc.

That's my understanding too, TTT.
A good idea? No, once in an EU state the asylum seeker has done the main business, as in possession is 90% of the law. Those denied asylum aren't in most cases "returned" anyway. They can "disappear" (that's in the positive, not the Tommy Robinson sense), or try their luck somewhere else. Then there are those who've remembered their mobile phones but lost their passports. Where do we send them back to?

Put the processing centres in places where there are genuine refugees - like the tens of thousands of Syrians living in camps in Turkey and the Lebanon

v_e, I tend to agree with you. Far better to stop the free ferry service to Europe altogether.
How will they be able to sort the wheat out from the chaff, and will those who are selected to be sent back, be allowed an appeal?
//... will those who are selected to be sent back, be allowed an appeal?//

Well, there's the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the European Convention ditto, the ECHR, the ECJ, an army of Human Rights lawyers, a very big trough and Gina Miller.

Amongst them all I'm sure a way can be found to ensure that every migrant (regardless of outcome) costs the European tax-payer half a million euros.
Say what you like about Cameron but he had the right idea re asylum seekers.
Can't be difficult.

"Just arrived ? Please sit down."
"I see you have just come from a country that isn't at war nor treats you badly, so you aren't a refugee then."
"Have you papers showing permission granted to come here to live ? Passport ?"
"No papers ? Ok sit over here with the returnees please. NEXT !"

The boat that brought them can take them back within the hour.
But it’s only voluntary.

What happens when a country or two gets fed up and opens them up again?

In any case they and the rest of the west should be looking to stop it at source. Stop the taxi service, get the taxi facilitators, sorry people traffickers taken out of the equation by slinging them in prison or something and set up migrant camps in countries that are at least on the same continent as they come from.

I can’t see how if properly managed there should be more than one or two migrant centres in the EU.
Of corse it'd make more sense helping the source country prevent fruitless journeys in the first place.
COURSE !!!!!
The problem is OG unless you make every African Nation give free houses, free benefits and a free health service it is not going to stop it. Add to that the 'tax' by most African leaders now the Brits and the Pakistanis/Indians have been booted out.

An easy was to stop most would be to patrol just out side the territorial waters and pop into them to 'rescue' as allwed by maritime law. They would then be still within the country they last left and so could be returned to it not taken to Europe. As it is the traffikers charge a fortune for an unseaworthy boat knowing full well the bleedin heart liberal rescuers will pick them up and take them to Europe.

It has to stop but I doubt this latest 'intuitive' will do anything. It's simply to get Angie off the hook.
Did any of you notice the latest twisting of language and new definitions? They are not illegal immigrants any more, according to Murkhell. They are irregular immigrants. Just wait until the Beep Beep See twig it. It will be all over the bulletins like a rash. Irregular immigrants my foot!!( other parts of the anatomy are available)
Well surely if you are irregular then you are bunged up from time to time?
Fetch the ex-lax.
