There doesn't seem any point in trying to tell what life was like back then. Most of you seem to be ''full up an't door shut''. You all believe statistics. When my gran used to tell what life was like in the 20s/30s I would listen, not contradict and take on board what she was saying with respect. You have to have lived through an era before you can really know what it...

People only left their doors open because there was nothing in the houses worth nicking!

Utter clap trap by the DM, designed to solicit a response from the ‘it was better in my day’ mob.
By the way, 50 years ago was the 60s, nearly 70s.
Never to be seen again. It's 2018 and we live in a more dangerous World. Technology and the pressures of Modern living have taken over our lives. We move forward, cannot turn Clock Back
yes, i played in the street in the fifties but then again no one in the street owned a car ...
Cricket, warm beer and "old maids bicycling to Holy Communion through the morning mist".
Happy days.
I remember (for just one example) knife crime in the Fifties - this sort of "nostalgia propaganda" is odious IMHO.
Aren't the people moaning about the state of the country today, the very same ones who changed it from what it was?
I'm sure the rag also lists all the things that were less appealing 50 years ago....don't they?
The article is 9 years old! Must have taken some finding to try and back up your rose-tinted hindsight view of the world, AOG.
Ginge do you mean rapes and incest that were brutal to women and young girls being brushed under the carpet? Women being classed as second class citizens?
I don't think AOG read it all either, Zacs......and as for the picture with the Thatcher lookalike Mum.....those poor kids must have gone to school reeking of mum and dad's ciggies..... :-(
....Z-M.....perhaps opticians were better decades ago, too?
But in those days nearly everybody smoked so the pong of smoke on their clothes would have gone unnoticed
The actual Date of the Article does not matter. That's how it was.
It's 2018 now, times have changed
Unmarried mothers forced to give their children up for adoption never know if they lived or died, children shipped abroad to be abused and in some cases disappeared entirely
Oh for the days of measles, mumps and polio...
I was merely using the date of the article to highlight AOGs ‘scrapping of the barrel’ attempt to justify his jaundiced view of history.
Think there was crime in the 50s. My brother was fined 10/- for cycling without a light on his bike.

No immediate media in the 1960s, don't make me laugh, did they think that we relied on the pony express or carrier pigeon back then?
