I wonder if this is why Wetherspoons withdrew its Steak Night option ?

I was wondering exactly the same thing. Looks like you're right

jno...at a business meeting on Wednesday someone said that when he and his wife went for the regular weekly steak at Wetherspoons, they were offered some vegetarian alternative !

But there is still not much in the way of info about what the Inspectors found in their surprise visit .....some more gees-gees perhaps ?
it was according to the news last night. This is spreading to other retailers too
If the steak is in fact 'gee gee', that can't be the only problem. Gammon steaks have been withdrawn too. Very strange.
Question Author
Some retailers are involved but I can't find out which ones. Luckily I rarely eat steak, or much beef come to that. It will all come out in the wash I suppose.
They say it's a mis-labelling problem, let's not build the gallows yet.

I've been in contact with the FSA and, shockingly, they have no knowledge of the rumour and 'hope-it's-not' machine that lurks in the shadows on Answerbank.
Question Author
Dougie....this isn't a rumour, although the gee-gee bit was me wondering. This is real and its happening now.

The FSA need to come clean and tell us what the problem is. If retailers are involved, then some of us may have products in our freezers, that have now been removed from sale.
Unsure why this isn't obvious. There was an issue. It would be expected to affect all buyers. One side claims it was just mislabeling, but non-compliance with rules has been found.
What isn't a rumour, Mikey?

Let me help you, anything that isn't actually known. That's why the FSA are investigating and haven't got round to phoning you with the details yet.

"It says that none of its products have caused illness and the recall was a "precautionary measure because of mislabelling"."
Question Author
Dougie......you seem to be in know....what does

"precautionary measure because of mislabelling"

actually mean ?
It means 'somebody stuck the wrong label on', Mikey.

Anything else is just speculation and/or scaremongering until we're given the facts.
Question Author
Dougie...the inspection visit was last week....haven't the FSA had enough time to tell us what went wrong ?

By the way, I am not panicking....I just want answers.

Given the meat industries past behaviour, is it any wonder that people may be concerned ?
"Dougie...the inspection visit was last week....haven't the FSA had enough time to tell us what went wrong ?"

You've answered your own question, Mikey.
Question Author
Dougie....yes, they haven't told us what is wrong !

No details on retailers, so we can check in our freezers.

Well done FSA !

As I understand it, the FSA is there to protect us, not the meat industry.
Vague and not very informative.
Looks like the 'spoons were well ahead of the game. Well done them.

And you have to wonder at them getting their meat at the same supplier as Jamie Oliver!
Waitrose and Lidl prepared fish products all trundle out of the same door of the same factory.
It was ever so in our aspirational world.
Question Author
Emeritus....thanks.....vague and not helpful in any meaningful way, and still no mention of retailers.

I presume this has something to do with sell-by/use-by dates, in the same way the previous high-profile exposure was.
//I presume this has something to do with//

Usually better not to presume but wait until the facts are released.

Saves getting egg on your face - especially on here :-)
