Regarding the shackled siblings...it doesn't bear thinking about. All I can think is "why?"

I think more autonomy and freedom from state involevment for all people is actually generally the way to go Jno, it has to be understood that this case is the exception of exceptions and you could use exceptional cases to call for legislation on almost any subject you like. Mikey has a problem with people living in yurts in muddy fields though so clearly he doesn't agree with me.
The West was a pretty extreme case - they went one step further and murdered some of their children whilst torturing the rest!
Ummm...at 11:51, you said that "it happens here too"

I accept that you don't mean that 13 children have been tortured in similar circumstances to this case.

But you are missing my point. Here in Britain, the LEA could visit kids at home, and I would hope that they do, especially if there may be cause for concern.

But in California, the local authorities are not allowed to visit these kids, or interfere in any way, and that is why this has happened.

Its all in this link.... a few paragraphs down from the top ::

While it does not answer your question about this couple, I do have some experience of living next door to a couple who are very strange and treat their children rather weirdly.

I live in a nice area, in a street of decent semi detached houses, where most of the families are what you may call "professional" people (middle class without being "rich").

But this couple next door just don't fit in to that bracket at all.

When my wife and I moved in about 20+ years ago he worked for an electronics company (fairly well paid I think) and they had two young children.

Neither parent knew how to look after their children so if it was cold with snow on the ground they would put them in back garden with no shoes or socks on and flimsy summer clothes.

We had to phone social services a number of times and also the NSPCC. My wife even videoed it and when Social Services came round to our house they watched the video. Even the school contacted social services as the parents were sending them to school in cold weather with no gloves or winter clothing.

Those children are now grown up (early 20s) but still live at home.

When we moved in there was an old Vauxhall Astra on the drive, plus a large Range Rover. The Astra is STILL on his drive, over 20 years later, and he has never driven it. He goes out in the Range Rover about once a month (if that).

He was a little strange, he was a "radio ham" and he used one of the large upstairs bedrooms as his radio room, leaving the two young children in the small "box" room.

Even though he has not done radio ham for years the family have NEVER used that large back bedroom and it is still full of his radio ham stuff, but covered in dust.

Meanwhile the two children went through their teens and early 20s both sleeping in the box room (about 8 foot by 6 foot) while this huge back bedroom was sitting there empty.

He was a hoarder, both inside and outside the house. Anyone who was having work done in the street (extensions, new drive etc) he would go there and collect any bricks they had left at the end and put them in his back garden.

He had a plan to build an extension on the side of the house with these assorted bricks but he has never done it and these hundreds of bricks are still sitting in a pile in his back garden.

About 15 years ago he had a load of sand and gravel delivered to the front of the house so he could build this extension. He got all his family to move all this sand and gravel to the back garden using a wheelbarrow (it took them ages).

But that sand and gravel is STILL sitting in his back garden after 15 or more years.

About 15 years ago, to build the extension, he moved a large greenhouse from near their house to the back of the garden. He took all the glass out, moved the greenhouse, but never put the glass back in.

They now have a huge greenhouse at the back of the garden with no glass in it.

He was made redundant about 15 years ago but has never had another job. He claims he has a bad back, but we have seen him in the garden climbing trees to curt down branches.

He now spends most of the day playing "war" computer games (we can hear the explosions and gun fire through the wall).

In fact he uses the main front living room as his "computer" room, even though he still has this huge empty bedroom upstairs with his radio ham stuff in it.

My wife has asked his wife why she does not ask him to get rid of all his old radio ham stuff but she says she is scared to bring the subject up.

Because he does not work they have very little money coming in. His wife does part time jobs here and there to bring in some money, while he sits at home playing on his computer.

Even when she is at work she always rushes home every day to make him his lunch, even though he is in all day doing nothing.

Their house is now a mess, they have not changed their curtains since we have lived here (over 20 years), never decorated the front of the house, they still have the Astra and Ra
Pasta...."sorry Mikey...you do seem to take regular pops at Americans"

If this case had happened here, then you can be assured that I would be making exactly the same points. But it happened in America. And until the residents of California look more closely at their laws, it may happen again.
Mikey - why are you not listening?
I am listening Umm.....its you that are ignoring my points about the laws in California.
Mikey no-one comes to check here either- why are you being so obtuse? This is not an American or a home schooling problem- stop being so rude.

Thanks for the apology Mikey...

*sigh*
Answerbank froze while I was entering the update above so that is why there is a strange ending.

Anyway to continue..

He still has the Astra and Range Rover on the drive. The Astra is full of "junk" as he uses it to store more of his hoarding.

A few weeks ago we got some mail of theirs by mistake and my wife went round to give them the letter. When his wife answered the door my wife could see that he was using the stairs for his hoarding and on the right hand side of every stair was stuff he had hoarded so you only had a small part of each stair to walk on.

He still has the piles of bricks and sand and gravel in the back garden that has been there about 15 or 20 years. It is now covered in dust and dirt and fallen leaves and branches so it looks awful.

In fact it is on the patio just outside their french windows so anyone in the back room looking out into the garden just sees this rubble and rubbish.

Whenever we get work done on our house he comes out to check what we are doing. He once made a man putting up a dividing fence between our houses to move it 1 inch as he said it was more on their side of the house than ours.

He once removed a manhole cover at the back of his house and when it put it back it cracked. This allowed rats to come out and run round our gardens. The council came round and told him to repair the manhole cover but when they went back 6 months later he had not done it so they said they would take him to court. He has now done it.

So when you live next door to a strange couple like this you can understand how these situations can happen in any country.
KV..........it IS an American problem....its the States laws that prevent the relevant authorities from acting.
Pasta...apology for what ?

LOl..LOL oh! dear.

mikey is a staunch Socialist and anything that smacks of Capitalism is an anathema to him ( nothing wrong in that more than 50% of folks in the UK are Socialists.
Capitalism and the U.S of A are, to mikey are synonymous ergo facto ripe for criticism in any form and at any opportunity.
Yes, mikey never misses a chance to have a pop at Capitalism in any form and yes Americans often take the brunt.
That is just........mikey.
Ummm....less of the personal insults please.

If you take the trouble to read the link that I posted you will see that the situation isn't the same here, as in California.

Spathy understands the point I am making.
Basically - the parents are to blame. Maybe the neighbours who turned a blind eye as well.
Have you read any of Kval's answers?
