What a wonderful idea ! We waste so much food these days, so anything that can help stop that, and help feed the poor is OK in my book.

Very good idea, I often eat dried foods beyond the date on the package, infact most foods apart from dairy I eat beyond the dates provided.

Me too....the notion that tinned soup, for instance is OK one day before a date, but not OK one day after is complete nonsense. Lets hope this spread to other Co-op areas.

so its not all products, just
The chain's 125 stores in East Anglia will sell dried foods and tinned products for just 10p in a bid to cut food waste.
Hubby ate spaghetti hoops 8 years out of date that had been hiding at the back of the cupboard and he is still here!!
I always thought the point of having dried or canned items was to preserve them, obviously some numpty decided some time ago there should be a 'BBD' on the items.

It's a very good idea and I hope it spreads to other supermarkets.

will see if stores like waitrose follow suit, somehow i doubt it.
Surely that will cannibalize from their full price sells ? Sounds a brave move, unless the profit on both are similar. Be interesting to see how it all pans out.
Mrs sqad wouldn't touch that food.
No reason.......she just wouldn't.

I've often eaten food past its 'best before' date with no problems. Just a little common sense required. Even 10p an item is better for the Co-op than sticking on the waste mountain.

Call me cynical if you like but the Co-op's product buyers might need more lessons in supply and demand economics.

Question Author

If I were to say that lots of women are irrational creatures, I would get into trouble with the AB Sisters....so I won't !
Get your tin hat on, sqad.
we're not irrational, grrrr, lol
I'm reasonable, rational and a wife.
Therefore I'm correct.
Question Author
lol Alba !
Mikey perhaps you would get grief because you do not have the experience with woman that only a long standing married man can have!
I think it is an excellent idea. I tend to apply the rationale that if it looks OK and smells OK it probably is OK. I have not knowingly poisened anyone. Yet.

Islay....you may very well be right there !
