I always though that Islam preferred women covered, does the koran say all bets are off if your brother puts it about a bit? I must admit to struggling with this one!

It's a different culture, and impossible for us to rationalise easily.
I am immensely glad I have no idea how their minds were working, thank goodness they have been caught.

It's interesting that one poster here thinks it's normal and another simply wants to attack me! I must confess to struggling with lefty thinking!
I cannot explain how they think shaming one cancels out the shame of another, for that I'm glad.

How do you think it works?
Luckily the girl wasn't arrested and stoned to death. A sick twisted culture much admired in the UK.

there does not appear to any rhyme or reason, I was hoping some logic would emerge from this discussion. A religion that generally insists that women are wrapped head to toe suddenly decides it's ok to strip off teenage girl and force march here round town because her brother puts it about a bit. if there is any sort of explanation for that I'm all ears.
TTT - // It's interesting that one poster here thinks it's normal ... //

Which poster thinks it's normal?
TTT - // ... if there is any sort of explanation for that I'm all ears. //

The explanation is - precisely because modesty is so highly prized in Muslim culture, the shame of being exposed like this is far worse for this woman than it would be for her Western counterpart.

Humiliation is far more seriously regarded in Eastern cultures than ours, and that is why this punishment was enacted as it was.

For a Muslim man, having a female member of his family shamed in this way is a greater punishment to him than something they might have done to him personally.
I suppose when your name's Ahmed Godiva something has to give.

Andy, who thinks it's normal? well you, I suppose I'll have to spell it out: "It's a different culture, and impossible for us to rationalise easily." = it's normal for them, as outsiders we do not understand.
Andy: "The explanation is - precisely because modesty is so highly prized in Muslim culture, the shame of being exposed like this is far worse for this woman than it would be for her Western counterpart. " - understood but why is the girl being punished for what her brother did, yes I know it's shame for him but why is an innocent used in this way?
If you take burning bushes talking to folk and loonies ready to sacrifice their sons because they hear heavenly voices that'll give you at least a jumping off point on your road to enlightenment, Tora.

Once you have full understanding then the glories of life in the early times Annie Domino will be yours. :-)
backward pre-medevil culture and to think there's a million and some in the uk with the same mindset if it was allowed.
Medieval peasants.

Mamya - a lot of folk frequently use 'PMSL' on here !
15C Savages.
The brother shamed their family by having an affair with one of their ladies, therefore by way of revenge they shamed his family by parading his sister naked. I'm wondering what they did to their own female family member who had the affair. Not a happy prospect in such a culture.
youngmafbog, 7th century, and they haven't learned a bloody thing since, as the koran cannot be questioned, as god wrote it through that dude who seen things in a cave...really
