Without Russia’s involvement in Syria how do you think the war would have progressed? Would the country be in a better situation now – or worse?

// they supply airstrikes and weapons to a Kurdish force that is in tacit alliance with the regime and involved in skirmishes with Arab rebels also backed by the U.S. //

That isn't correct. The Kurds have always oppose Assads regime. However, they find their territory attcked by IS fighters and they are a more immediate threat than the Government. The Russians have offered to help the Kurds in their struggle with IS, and have begun arming them. The Kurds are fighting for themselves against IS, not in supoort of Assad. Rather than being in a tacit alliance, they instead have a mutual enemy who take priority.
(Russian arming the Kurds has spooked Turkey, who have stepped up their campaign against the Kurdish YPG, thus helping Islamic State).

Mikey, as one of Russia’s most vocal critics, is conspicuous by his absence in this thread. I would very much like him to take a look at this question – and answer it.
