//A schoolgirl who left the UK to join Islamic State in Syria is feared to have been killed in an airstrike in the country.

Kadiza Sultana was one of three teenage girls who fled east London and entered Syria via Turkey last year.

Her family say they were hoping to get her across the border and into Turkey before she died, after she became disillusioned with life in Syria.//

Will this deter others with similarly idealistic notions?

One less to wreak more havoc on the western world, no sympathy.
jambutty - //One less to wreak more havoc on the western world, no sympathy. //

Speaking as a parent with adult children, I cannot be responsible for what my children do, but if their actions got them killed, I would not grieve any less on the basis that what they did was not something I would have wished for them.

So I can't share your succinct view on this occasion.
I think the Original post is going off line a little, Naomi has a good point lets keep to it.

But everyone doesn't, so the question of potential annoyance does not arise.

At least you do see the problem if everyone did it.
Probably why they don't do it.

It has always been the nature of debates on AB that discussions widen, and I am sure that as long as it doesn't stray too far, and I don't believe in this instance that it has - then the ED will allow it to run.

Since the OP concerns the idealistic notions of the young woman in question, I think it is reasonable that that aspect is explored further.

Maybe - we'll never know ...

“They were taken in by the religion based nonsense of fighting for an Islamic state and death to the infidel”.

Precisely - death to the infidel - I doubt these girls have shed any tears over the number of ‘infidels’ killed, so I won’t be shedding any tears over the death of an ISIS sympathiser.

These girls may well have been impressionable and naïve, but having been brought up in a civilised society, they were old enough to have been aware of the carnage that their chosen path would lead them to, and old enough to know the difference between right and wrong.

Will others be deterred? I doubt it, because they will all believe they are doing it for the greater good, and death is something that happens to other people.

I am certainly not rejoicing in her death, but I’m not bothered by it either.
Oh dear, how sad, never mind.
If only this young life lost would serve to make others think - as said doubtful at this time.
dave50 - //Oh dear, how sad, never mind. //

Some people do mind.

Then in what way is their casual uncaring attitude to death any different from yours?
Because andy-hughes @ 13.20, these girls chose to join a death cult, and in the case of Kadiza Sultana, the tables have been turned.
What goes round comes round.
And please don’t assume that from one post, that you are conversant with my attitude to death.
I prefer to give my sympathies to the people who deserve them. The victims of terrorism, for example.

I am not assuming that I am conversant, you have clearly stated what your attitude is - so you cannot backtrack because it is exposed as being similar to the terrorists which you despise.

//I prefer to give my sympathies to the people who deserve them. The victims of terrorism, for example. //

In her own way, this young woman is a victim as well - as has been explained by myself and others earlier in the thread. Extending a degree of sympathy for a misguided teenager does not equate to wholesale support for ISIS or its methods.

andy-hughes @ 13.36.

I am not backtracking, there is a world of difference between the death of a terrorist sympathiser, and the death of someone through any other cause.

You may see her as a victim - “explained by myself and others” - don’t be so patronising, it’s an opinion, not an explanation, but it would appear that your opinions are right, and anyone who disagrees is wrong.

It would also appear that I’m your choice of person to be the opposition in ‘the andy-hughes show’ today. Makes a change from Naomi or AOG, I suppose, but I have neither the time nor the inclination to be part of your need to “get the last word in”. Just accept that I think you are a fool for having any sympathy for this girl, and you think I’m (insert relevant words here), for not giving a toss about her, and exactly where did I use the word “despise”?

And yes you did assume you were conversant with my attitude to death, which I resent. So you can keep your psychoanalysis to yourself - and here you are, the floor is all yours - you can have the last word.
