Plane just crash landed, on fire, what kind of brainless eejit stops to get their bag out of the overhead locker? If they were in my way I'd boot them down the aisle, plonkers!

Surely getting the emergency exits ready takes a few minutes in which time you could take you bag out of the locker.

Not saying I would though. I'm more likely to panic than care about the contents of my suitcase.
As the link advises, it is simply reaction without thought.

Most people put their essentials in their hand luggage, things they need even if their luggage is missing, so it's a normal thought to grab the bag that has your 'life' in it.

I heard a guy on the radio yesterday say that he grabs one of the clear plastic bags from security and puts his mobile phone, credit card and computer memory stick in it, and puts that in his pocket. Then if he is evacuated he has money, contact, and can work - all the immediate essentials.

But I do understand people's need to get their bags, however unsafe that might be.

No ummmm, look at how long it takes to get off a plane when it's not an emergency, if everyone is getting their stuff together the evac time would be 10 minutes not 90 seconds. The crew are trained to have those doors open in seconds. I have anything vital in my pockets anyway.
The sort of idiot that has a death wish perhaps.

However those that got their bags are alive as are those that didn't. Therefore it might encourge more people to ignore safety and get bags in future. Probably leading to more time getting out and more deaths.

Perhaps those that get out and have a luggage bag with them should be fined a hefty sum. That may discourage some from doing it.
I carry everything vital separately. Even when Ryanair had a one bag policy I'd keep it all in another bag inside my suitcase and take it out once on board.

My clothes are not important but the fact that I don't know anyones phone number kinda means my phone is important.

You can't compare the two scenarios.

A plane arrives, everyone gets up, stretches, yawns, says hello to the person behind or in front whom they haven't seen for hours, politely waits for the people nearest to get their bags down, get their own bags down, and politely and calmly shuffle towards the exit, usually letting at least one traveller go in front of them.

An emergency landing - everyone gets up and starts heading for the exit as quickly as possible and some, but by no means all, will grab their hand luggage, and everyone is off as soon as is humanly possible.
Or maybe, Cassa, the lockers should autolock in an emergency.

gawd help us, phone numbers? really!

That does not allow for human nature.

A person who is punished after the event will not serve as an example to anyone to prevent them doing the same.

That presumes that people in that situation are thinking outside the immediate scenario, and pondering their actions in a detached manner - that doesn't tend to happen when your plane is on fire!
The real threat is if someone takes a luggage item down the slide when it has a sharp projection that could slash the chute.

I'm not sure if the attendants would forcibly separate people from their bags, in a real emergency but it ought to be discouraged.

This specific Emirates crash was unusual in that the landing gear was up leaving a shorter drop to the ground (I don't know if a shallower slide angle makes sliding less easy).

Added to that, nobody could guess which side the fire would be worst. Halving the number of useable exits adds pressure to the crowd+bags situation.

Thankfully, they survived but it will encourage les autres to do as they did, which might not pay off, next time.

Yes phone numbers really!

If I was involved in a situation like that, my priority would be letting my loved ones know that I am OK, and like ummmm, I don't carry a phone directory in my head, so I would need my phone. As a man, my phone is in my pocket, no problem, but I would entirely sympathise with any lady getting her phone out of a bag or wherever.
Yeah...If my family seen that the flight I was on has crashed landed I'd like to be able to speak to them. Those are the items I keep on me. Phone, tablet, paperwork, etc...

If it was full of my Bribe Money I would.
How else would you do business with the Arabs during your trip?

so andy and ummmm, you are prepared to kill people to retrieve your phones? bang goes your liberal cred there!
No TTT....that's why I don't keep what I consider essentials in my suitcase, which I've already explained!
Everyone who was seen on that video and was seen entering the terminal with their bags should have been immediately arrested and jailed for putting passengers lives at risk.

After a plane crash the first thing I think about is get off the plane before it blows up not let me get my lipstick and tights.
I think it's so just a human reaction for some people.
anneasquith, to hold up other passengers from leaving whilst they wrestle with the overhead compartment? Probably, it's called being selfish and endangering others lives. I just can't believe what I'm seeing sometimes. Has it really came to this or are the buffoons so gormless they didn't realise the danger they were in even though they just had a crash? Unbelievable.
nope...my phone would be in pocket with any tabs /precious jewellery / wallet etc already..sod the rest ...
