Think about it this way:
Applicant 1: I've lived in the borough all my life, and I'm British. I am able-bodied, with no dependents and I want a council flat, because I can't afford a mortgage. At the moment, I'm renting a two bedroomed flat, but I want to reduce my outgoing so I can afford a second skiing trip each year.
Applicant 2: I've lived in the borough for 20 years. Originally, I'm from Poland, and I work part time, because I have to look after my daughter who has multiple sclerosis. We are in private accommodation, but the landlord wants us out because he wants to sell the property. At the end of the month, we will be homeless.
So...which of the two do you assign the council flat to?
Me...I'd go with the bloke looking after his disabled daughter, rather than the bloke who wants to see Val Des Aire a couple times a year.

UKIP had a 1-item manifesto.....which was to take UK out of Europe.
Anything else they have stated was done so purely because they had an additional 7 pages, or so, to fill at the Printers.
There is so much more about a Political Party's aims and agenda that need to be known and *believed/believable* before they will get my vote.

Like all citizens are computer savvy or just want to stay indoors all day staring at a tube or play computer games like some spotty moronic youth. The library was my mothers social life and free. They catered for sight impaired with large print editions.
Perhaps you think the elderly are an unnecessary expense and euthanasia is a cheaper option. Bet you watched Soylent Green more than once!!!

Our little mobile library (once every fortnight) is a lifeline to many in our village and a deep pleasure and asset to us. It was threatened with closure but the protests were such that it will now move to once a month instead. Bad enough, but better than no books whatever.

What about the old lady up the hill from us who fell and broke her hip just before Christmas and is more or less isolated in her home? The librarian knows all the sorts of books she prefers and a new delivery is organised every 2 weeks. Many others rely totally on the mobile library visits for public information as well as books.
For your information, I have no mobile phone reception here - like most others except the few living on top of the hill - and broadband is extremely slow and iffy. There is a bus twice a week to the nearest towns, it runs there in the morning and returns 3 hours later. You really think that is OK for people?

I have to agree with Jourdain. A decent public library is a Godsend.Every time I go to mine it is hard to get a place on a computer. We on AB just do not realise just how many people , mainly elderly, just do not have access to the internet apart from at the library.
Our library has activity days for young children where they are read stories by the staff. Nothing compares to being read to by a reader who really loves books and enjoys sharing them.
I owe most of my education to the public library. My Mother was a school teacher who specialised in teaching remedial reading. She had taught me to read , write my name and count up to ten before I started school.
At school once the teachers realised I could actually read they lost interest in me to concentrate on the others who could not read. I read every book in the school library then joined the public library and read every book in the children's section of our small branch library. I then moved on to the main library in the town center. A librarian noticed how much I was reading and told me that I could use the main adult library as long as I stuck to the Non fiction section (which was all I was interested in).When it came to lessons, I had normally already gained the information the teachers were trying to teach by reading books. On several occasions I knew that the teacher was handing out incorrect information due to my reading. But I also had the sense to know that they would not accept being told they were wrong by a 14 year old. I owe a lot to that librarian ! I went on to get a degree in Chemistry and work in Africa and the Middle East.

You seem to have had the same experience of the value of Libraries as I, EDDIE. I was exactly the same (except for the degree in Chemistry - left that to No. 1 daughter, who began school with a R.A. of 9). Just reading my way through all those books taught me so much and to be admitted to the adult section was a wonder, I remember the feeling of awe.
I am now a voluntary Reading Tutor at our local academy and I get a huge glow when I transform a reluctant, intimidated child into one which seeks out books as a friend. It is the first step.

I used to drive a local library van, and I can assure you that in remote villages where there is a bus twice a day, we were a very welcome site to the housebound, disabled, elderly, and carless residents. We often had cups of tea given to us. I would vote Ukip without a doubt. The other lot screwed up Royal.
Marshy....UKIP only have one MP, and he probably won't last long. The Party is without a Leader ( again) and over 16,000,000 people voted against Brexit, so where does this "majority agree with their view" come from ?
