She clearly didn't know what she was talking about, although the rest of the Cabinet seems to share her lack of knowledge I suppose.

I’ve never quite understood why State education is entrusted to Local Authorities.
Education is one of the most important services that the State provides on behalf of its citizens (probably only behind defence and health). Could you imagine the defence budget being devolved to local councils whose democratic representatives probably include the greatest number of busybodies and self-important creeps among any of the public bodies? Look what’s happened in Wales where the health budget has been devolved to the Welsh Assembly (which is in reality just a large local authority).
Making schools into academies is a step in the right direction. I attended a direct grant grammar school which I suppose was an earlier (very successful) version of the academy principle. The school was allocated money from the education budget on a per capita basis and the school was run by the trustees and governors (there were no “parent governors” then). The local authority was not involved. I probably received the best education available without my parents having to pay.
Local authorities have no business interfering in education. They are OK at emptying dustbins (though some of them make a big song and dance even about that); sweeping the streets (after the bin men have spilled half the rubbish over the road) changing lightbulbs in the streetlamps and filling in potholes. That’s about it. Education should be left in the charge of people who know what they’re on about.
Of course the teaching unions resent these plans. They like to think they control the agenda when it comes to education and in Labour controlled authorities they certainly have a good chance of doing just that. Hopefully these plans will see their influence decline and the State education system improve considerably.

Stuey...quite correct, but an academy is not bound to have properly trained and qualified Teachers on its pay roll. Also, this is asset stripping in a huge way.

Most politicians (of all persuasions) lack credibility Mikey. The exceptions are every rare and Ms Morgan is not amongst them. It is always going to be so particularly with Ministers (and Shadow Ministers) because few of them have any real grasp of the matters with which they are entrusted. We’ve all been educated (well, most of us have) but none of us would claim to be experts on education or capable of running the State Education system with any degree of success.

She has rapidly gained a repututation for being promoted byond her ability. There must be a dearth of talent in the Conservative ranks if this is the best the have to offer as Education Minister.

Changing all schools to Academies whill not happen.
Not because Labour or the NUT are against it. But because the Conservatives run the most Local authorities, and they are not happy about the change.
When 40% of county councils, 9000 Councillors and many Conservative MPs are against this proposal, then I am sure it will either be watered down, changed significantly, or kicked into the long grass.
