/// Today French coastguard announced it is beefing up patrols in and around the Calais area after a number of migrants have been found in recent weeks trying to cross the Channel in homemade rafts in the dead of night. ///

Perhaps our coastguard should also be beefing up patrols in and around the Dover area as well?

You'd think that the French would be glad to let them go. And I imagine your Coastguard cutters would just rescue them and bring them ashore to the UK.

The threat of a Drake style broadside may well have a deterrent effect on them!
And the intrepid invaders would merely yell "Damn the torpedoes: Full speed ahead.".

I would imagine that, even with current measures, the port of Dover would detect migrant rafts approaching or it would be reported by nearby ships.
So yeah we could "beef" up the patrols in harbour areas but - If the migrants float out of the main shipping lanes and approach coastline to the North with rafts still intact.... How to you patrol the coastline
Having crossed the channel by yacht around the straits of Dover a few times I would rate their chance of being run down by cargo ships and being converted into fish food at about 80%....utter fools.
need him... need him...... there was only one Drake of 1588 vintage. Yeah yeah I know Mr Hughes will fly at me for nit-picking. well let him

and the raft builders - why would they need Drake or more than one ?
Papillon would be better - Papillon floated out of Devils Island on a raft if you recollect. - so perhaps it should be "ou se trouvent les Papillon auand il y en a besoin " ?

and Drake he wasnt averse to robbing the ships he over took wasnt he ?
So you are sayng we need a few looters on the British side, Hmmm interesting point

and Gloriana - Queen Elizabeth I that is ! - said of Drake:
"He is a gay dog ...."
and somehow I dont think she was saying "he whistleth the live-long day"
I think she was saying something else

I hope he kept his hands off the girls and boys of Rotherham and Rochdale.
Dirty Boy !

[ yes he would have as he was born in Buckland Newton Devon and had a strong Devon accent which was mimicked at Court during his life ]

Drake hmmm - AOH why didnt you choose Stalin or Trotsky ?
"The revelations come after aid workers said the dismantlement of the Jungle camp is driving desperate migrants to increasingly desperate efforts to reach Britain."

These 'desperate' illegals are safe, have the offer of dry, heated shelter plus food and clothing. They're driven by greed, the quest for free money and that's all. France is a perfectly safe haven, they just don't dish out the goodies like the mugs in the UK.
If they're found floundering about in the channel tow them straight back to France and destroy their craft and keep doing it till they get the message.
Anyway, these patrols, if they do come about, are in the wrong place at the wrong time: They should be patrolling off the shores of North Africa, and returning these tourists back where they came from.

Do we have any coastguards left? Genuine query, I seem to remember them being cut to the bone some years ago.
Well, I'm not sure that Charlie Drake would be anything but welcoming - 'Hello my darlings' as the stowaways emerge from the back of a lorry.
And the vast majority of these illegals will already be well aware that if caught at sea..and they will probably make sure they are caught...will be taken on board and brought back to blighty instead of being towed straight back to France...
