Is the writer correct? She states that we criticise other cultures for their treatment of woman yet British women suffer the same.

Are we a mysogynistic society?

I think she's whinging about nothing, dear.
I think there is probably a lot of casual sexism against both sexes that goes umremarked upon in this country. Two things that immediately come to mind are as follows. I went to pick up a city the other night and had to wait.there were several of us waiting and all the men got offered a free beer but not the women. On the other hand I was in the shop and saw a poster for some man eater make up brand which had a picture of a man tied up on a chair with no top on and the woman standing over him whip in hand. If it was the other way round it would have caused outcry
For city read curry
she's having a turkish! Critcising a bimbo for getting her thrupneys out at the the races is hardly comparable to giving a 1000 lashes for flashing an ankle is it?
There will always be sexism, that's for sure. Much of it is banter some is quite a lot more serious. Generally in this country I think the woman's lot is improving greatly, unfortunately it still has a long way to go though.
In what way we treat women badly ? Women have the vote, they can drive and go out alone if they wish, unlike some places in the Middle East that I can mention. But if women don't want us chaps to look at their breasts, why have them on display in the first place ?

it seems that some women want their cake and eat it too....they want to look attractive and then complain when they are noticed !
Why are men always portrayed as half wits in the adverts?
Because they are halfwits :-) (I'm joking)

To give the rest of the male population something to aspire to? ;o)
LOL
Sexism rearing it's head.
We're messing, AOG!!!

I could be probably be called sexist...
slow news day.
Not looked at the link, but in my life it has always seemed that women tend to get better treatment not worse. Maybe during the course of my life that has been changing as I can see adults perhaps undervalued women (save that they were expected to be treated with courtesy, in case they broke or something) when I was younger and unaware of such adult issues, and now society undervalues men; but even as a kid I knew the girls were getting better treatment and getting away with stuff simply because they were sugar and spice... and they couldn't possibly have meant to do anything wrong, whereas the slugs and snails boys couldn't possibly have meant to do anything right.
That's interesting bednobs. It's usually the women that have freebies, like free entry to the nightclub for example. You should have asked where your compensatory beer was.
'Women have the vote, they can drive and go out alone if they wish'. Wow, we don't know we're born, do we ????

To refer to the OP, that woman's wrong. Women in some cultures are treated appallingly.
I just think they are the usual bunch of Z listers trying to extend their microfame.

It is easy to see the vast differences in other cultures, simply because they resonate as being unlike what we know.

But for every culture that has systems in place that we find odd, or wrong, we have systems that seem perfectly normal and acceptable to us, that others would find odd or disturbing.

What we should try and avoid is dealing in absolutes and stereotypes.

To say that all Muslim men treat their women badly is as bad as saying that all European men are chauvinistic sex pests. It has to be about nuances, and degrees, and a willingness to accept that because we think something is wrong does not automatically make it so - just different from us, which is not the same thing.

We should beware of making ourselves the world's moral guardians and inflicting what we think best on people who don't happen to agree with us.
