I have just read this article, what a vile man Parkinson was, but what baffles me is why his 3 grown up daughters that he fathered with his wife have never tried to contact their younger half-sister, just goes to show what horrible people they are I suppose!

Parkinson has that Tory quality - the ability to pretend that something 'unpleasant' simply never happened. He never acknowledged his affair, or his daughter, because it was simply an inconvenience to his political and public image, and it would appear that his family lined up right behind him with the same attitude. I would be deeply ashamed to be...

Andy.

\\\\He embarked on an affair and was caught out. \\\

That was the poorly dealt hand......he was caught out. I would say that 50% of married men have affairs......with a good hand dealt, one is not caught out, but with a poor hand, then you pay the price. Please don't ask me from whence i get my statistics..........

\\\\\But it didn't end there - the obliterated any concedpt of his daughter from his mind, and enforced legal action to ensure that the media did the same. He kept her without vital financial support, and left her mother to shoulder the burden of her mental condition - including questions about why her daddy never comes to see her. \\\\

Truth be known, that is not such an uncommon situation...in my experience.

I've had my say, but I'll say again, I'm with andy on this one.....
I have no need to bring politics into my view - I find it wholly sad that any man (yes, I know some on here who came from such a background) who totally rejects the child he has fathered as a cold fish and without very good reason I'm sure I would dislike them.

Of course she was a grown woman and knew what she was about, but his total lack of regard for his daughter was shoddy (putting it mildly).

Mamyalynne, //I have no need to bring politics into my view //

Quite right. My point precisely!

Your metaphor is a poor one Sqad.

Being dealt cards means you have no idea what you will receive, or any control over the aftermath - hardly the case here I am sure you can agree.

It's not that Parkinson refused to step up after he fathered a child that is so odious, although heaven knows that is bad enough.

He used his money and position to prevent his mistress or child ever being mentioned in the media, in order to protect his public and political reputation.

That is not such a 'common situation' in anyone's experience!

LOL...thanks.

I would do the same if i could afford it..as did Ryan Giggs etc/
andy-hughes, //He used his money and position to prevent his mistress or child ever being mentioned in the media//

Rubbish! They were mentioned regularly. Google it.

You are of course entitled to your view.

Personally it is a view I would be utterly ashamed to hold.
// He kept her without vital financial support, and left her mother to shoulder the burden of her mental condition -//

there was extensive and expensive litigation on this
and I cannot think that the poor penniless starving mother ( and child ) did not make sure that there was financial provision

did they perhaps reprove each other of even quarrel about the definition of adequate ? ..... you bet they did !
\\\\\You are of course entitled to your view.

That is your prerogative, but i am not at all ashamed to hold that view.
In my view his behaviour was despicable, being unable and unwilling to face the responsibilities involved fathering a child with someone who had been his lover for years. He was a complete and utter scumbag.
\\\\That is not such a 'common situation' in anyone's experience!\\

I didn't say that...please read more carefully my post 15.57.

If you are not referring to that then I apologise.

Indeed, you did say an 'uncommon situation' - a typo is evident in my response - but a crucial one.

My apologies for the misquote.
Peter Pedant - //I cannot think that the poor penniless starving mother ( and child ) did not make sure that there was financial provision //

And how exactly do you imagine they 'made sure'?

Have you any experience of trying to get financial support from an absent father?

I do - personally, and with two of my three children.

Your post suggests you have none at all - or you would not be making such cavalier pronouncements.

I have to agree with Andy on this one.

A lot of you are correct in saying that many men shirk responsibility when a child is the product of an affair, and its also true that it does take two to tango. What makes him a vile scumbag in my eyes is the way that he used his position, money and power to silence his mistress and his daughter, on reading the article in question the poor girl had a terrible time at school, her name wasn't allowed to be included in any publicity in school plays etc! It would be interesting to hear the three elder half-sisters version of events and to find out why they have had no contact with her, in my opinion, like father like 3 sisters!!
The situation of the married-man/mistress/'love-child' is as old as time itself. Where this particular situation deviated from the norm was Parkinson's use of the courts and injunctions to, effectively, air-brush Sarah and Flora from their own lives.
100% agree saintpeter ......
I'm unsure why they would feel a need to contact a half sister. One grows up and has one's own life to lead. Anyway I do not know any of those families involved so can't say who is nasty and who is nice. There was an affair, and a split, and it's the business of those involved.

//....There was an affair, and a split, and it's the business of those involved.//

I would agree, if we were talking about Joe Bloggs down the street .

However, Cecil Parkinson was a prominent politician who chose to be in the public eye and therefore is expected to portray a higher standard of behaviour, than the said Joe Bloggs
Thats a new approach. It doesn't matter who does it but depends what you does make it matter :-)
