As always with this type of debate, the two sides line up -
one side thinks it is offensive and wrong, and deserved punishment,
the other side thinks it was humorous banter and the lady should have taken it in good part.
Neither will convince the other.
Personally, I think it was thoughtless and inappropriate, and unprofessional to embarrass someone on live television in that fashion.
That said, it was probably not intended to offend or embarrass the journalist, so an apology, which I believe was offered, should have been the end of the matter.
The conclusion it's easiest to draw is that this is a sledgehammer / nut interface, but the severity of the fine may indicate that this is a required message to both the player and others of their professional responsibilities when appearing on screen as part of their team.

We have cross-posted, but it is clear that you belong to one of the two positions I described.
If the journalist was embarrassed, then that is bad behaviour by a professional sportsman who is old enough to know better, and to justify it with the usual 'she needs to get a life / sense of humour etc. ..' doesn't really cut it.
I can only assume that, as I said, the severity of the punishment suggests that this is not the first time, and that a marker is being put down by the team.

Perhaps TV networks should stop hiring Model like presenters? A few more pigs that fell out the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down would soon stop this.
Of course thought the TV networks use pretty women to attract the eye of the sportsman so they can get an interview, but the PC brigade will ignore this of course.

For myself I could have dealt with him easily though my bosses may not have liked what I said on live television.
The thing is not about being offended but rather of someone expecting to walk through life saying whatever they like with no consequences - now he may rethink his oh so witty blokey type remarks.

I say lots of things that have inappropriate racial, misogynistic, ageist etc, ect overtones. My mates (men women of different colours) see it has banter and join in. If I tried it with a stranger I wouldn't expect them to join in ... I would expect to recieve a smack in the mouth.

As an alternative - what about responding to a professional journalist who happens to be an attractive woman, rather than ensuring that men behave like adults by employing women who are seen as unattractive.
This lady is a professional sports journalist, doing her job. I am sure she has more than her fair share of drinks invitations, but there is a time and a place - this was neither of them.

This lady is a professional sports journalist, doing her job. I am sure she has more than her fair share of drinks invitations, but there is a time and a place - this was neither of them.
He (by many accounts) is a serial sexual opportunist - using his status/position to harrass women. The fact that it is done with a sly wink and winning smile doesn't change things.
I think the worst thing about this particular incident was that (if she had replied forcefully) it could have cost her her job - whereas he thought he was bullet proof.
At least he now knows that the bullets can reach his wallet (if not his over enthusiastic libido ...).

From what I can see, she hasn't protested at all - it is the player's employers who have taken the action - she did not ask for him to be fined or banned.

If the lady got her job on her looks alone, she would last about five minutes before being appropriately vilified for knowing nothing about what she is supposed to be talking about.
